I never said I was old, hell when I turn 75 I won't be old. But I can tell you when I was 15 an LS1 swap was unheard of. Now an LS1 is about as common as a SBC was then.
FWIW, you're considered old nowadays when you dubbed mix tapes for your walkman and didn't have a cell phone at 13.

I like my cam, but I have a smaller car with a manual. 2002 5.3, Texas Speed 224/228 on 112 LSA. For a truck I'd go closer to the 220R. 112 LSA will make it chop. Check youtube for sound clips to see if it makes the sound you like.
Are you prepared to tune or pay for a tune?
Everyone seems to trust Pat G. If you're willing to spend the coin and wait for a custom cam, he may be able to help.
Check performancetrucks. They may have some better input.

good luck bro. Dont let some of the old cranks hold you down. I started young and always focused on what i wanted to do rather than what everyone else is doing. It has served me well. Hope you get the thing running. Most kids dont wanna work at all. Im impressed your even attempting a swap. Have fun be safe.

Lol, no, not that fancy, just the black/silver Sony with the rewind button broke and a pencil on standby..... you know, just in case the "flip and fast forward" trick wouldn't work, lol.

Most of us are
Just embrace the knowledge you've earned and keep renewing your membership to the "Busted Knuckles" club.
I can understand that. Granted, I was young enough to have a cell phone at 18, but it couldn't play an actual song, it was just some door-bell-like tones, had a pull-out antenna, and looked like what Zack Morris and A.C. Slater had when they made it to college, lol.

When I talked with the guys at TSP, they suggested staying smaller than the 228R, even with the ported heads I bought. I've never had my car on a dyno, but it seems like you'd need more than a 2500 to work well with an auto. Don't get caught up in having the "biggest" cam you can get. Plenty of truck guys run 216/220 range stuff with good results.
Mail tunes are under 250ish if I recall. Dyno tunes are much more. HPTuners is about 700 to own, but there is a pretty steep learning curve.

Its not a "big" cam by any means, but most of what you see are for larger displacement or higher compression builds. The 5.3 builds tend to stay on the smaller end of the spectrum, at least from what I've seen.
Dyno tunes depend on the shop. I think they started around 600 at the shop I was considering before deciding to buy HPT.

I'm no cam expert but when I corresponded with TSP last year about a cam for a 5.3 they suggested a 220R and nothing bigger than a 224R. They said once you go past that point on a stock headed and intake 5.3 you're most likely losing power and torque. However if you went with heads and intake, a 228R would probably be a good choice.
And at your age, if you could get HPTuners, learn how to use it, and attend some of the tuning classes, you could be starting yourself a very bright future.
I'm not trying to fill you with big dreams but, if you'd like to be in the automotive performance industry, now would be a great time to start. Get familiar with the new LT1 style motors.
Congrats on being so motivated at a your age, transfer that drive into all aspects of your life and you will go far.
