tach signal to can bus?

One way that I know of that will work is to use an Arduino processor and a CAN-BUS shield to convert the tach signal to the Subaru CAN-BUS signals. You would need to "sniff" the stock BUS to figure out what the headers are for the tach signal. This will take some time to reverse engineer it but many have done it on other makes of vehicles. You could then write a program to take the tach input from the LS and broadcast the correct header information on the BUS.
There is possibly another way but it would take more research. In the cluster will be a processor chip that is set to decode the CAN-BUS info and in turn run the stepper motors of the gauges. You may be able to grab a GM cluster and find the processor that decodes the GM CAN-BUS signals and actually wire it into your Subaru cluster so that you could hook the GM BUS directly to the cluster. This is purely speculative but something you could look into.
I think the 1st option is your best route. Google hacking CAN-BUS with Arduino and you will find a lot of info.

Also try Vipec or Syvecs. They are standalone ecu's with CAN ability. If they offer a unit for the BRZ, it might be able to run the dash. And if so, the ecu should be easily capable of running your engine then.
