Getting an engine out of a roll over
Getting an engine out of a roll over Is it a bad idea to get an engine out of a rolled over truck? My theory is it probably ran a little while upside down, so it wouldn't have had any oil for a short period of time, but couldn't have run long enough to do any horrible damage, right? I'm thinking it sat upside down for a while after the wreck since there was some oil in cylinders 4,6 and 8. Also the intake has some oil in it. it turns over fine and is super clean on the inside, so I figured it was worth a shot since it was reasonably priced. I might have to try to start it on the garage floor if I can find a way to keep it from flipping over when it starts....
I've seen quite a few builds using roll-over engines.
Oil in the intake is normal, even if it hasn't been upside down.
Set it on a tire and have it attached to an engine crane. That should hold it steady enough. Just don't rip the throttle unless you want to chase after it.

Take the intake and tb off , get all the oil out of it, clean it up, dry it off with compressed air , leave it the sun to dry out and reinstall it. This will minimize the oil burn off, that will happen on your start up til it burns off.It will take a little while for it to clear up but it should be fine .

guy on my other site I am on had one . couldn't figure out the rattling in the bottom end.
finaly pulled the pan and found a bent connecting rod . had to reman the motor .
if price is super good or you like to gamble I say go for it with caution.

Wiped out some rod bearings in a 4.3l pretty quickly by flopping on a rig on its side. Compression was fine and all the bearing material was in the oil filter. Ran fine when back on all fours, except for a knock. Sold it as a core. Oil can make it into the cylinders and rods can get bent upon restart as well. Buyer beware.
The engine will not flip over. There is no resistance to the rotating mass. same reason your mower does not spin in circles when you let go of the handle. Fire it up and run it for 1 minute with good oil. It will be fine. If you are really worried about it, you can borrow my engine run stand. I can get an engine connected and running in less than 30 minutes on it.
I bought a rollover truck for 600$ and took a chance. Had it hauled home, tried to start it but no fuel. The fuel pump fuse had blown for some reason. Put a fuse in it and it fired right up. No noises or anything, It had 245K on it and smoked like a freight train until all the oil had burn out of the intake and such. Put almost 10K miles on it since then and haven't looked back. I guess some are luckier than others.
