Default tap oil cooler holes in block for remote filter?

I need to modify my Fbody oil pan by cutting into the area where the oil cooler is for my steering rack. I see that Canton makes an adapter that screws in place of the filter which would probably work. My question, however, is could I use the oil cooler ports on my oil pan and tap them for pipe thread, thereby avoid buying the adapter? Are those indeed oil cooler ports up above the filter under that plate with the nipple looking thing on it? Then I would make a block off plate for the filter. I hope it makes sense what I am saying.
