The BCM is not required for standalone operation on an E38 system.
'08 and up Express vans used the E38 with a 4L80E this is a factory app there are no "gremlins". On E38 apps with a 4l80e they used the T42 trans controller.
That said I'd go with the 6Lxx trans since it's a much more common combo and you get two more gears.

Tuning VVT isnt really a big deal that was blown out of proportion early on. With a small cam it has some solid benefits, with bigger aftermarket cams, not so much. im still NO fan of GenIV management for swaps but suit yourself.
Ive been wrestling with mine for four years now, granted a t56, but theres a lot of stuff needing HACKED out of the ECM to get it to run normal, and even then you stuck with hard coded fan temps etc. A pile of sacrifices and extra cost over working with a 24x system. Anyways as I said its your money and time. Im done with this one

Lots of interesting info here. I've been wondering if you could make a Gen-IV & 4L80E combo work; would love to have VVT in the nova and a 4L80E would be easiest to install.

I have an LY6 Complete with VVT and the 4L85E from a 2009 express van, Jon @ PSI supplied programmed the E38 and TCM, I didn't make it easy for him, I swapped to the vet gas pedal/MAF, camaro vvt cam, intake and throttle body and MAP. It took a couple of tries but he was able to make it run. I still get a rich code now and then but it runs well, I plan to get it to a local tuner after a few more mods. Give Jon a call; try to use as many units from the same vehicle as you can.

Yea, I thought I was being good by keeping it simple, keeping the engine as it, using the gas pedal from the same rig, not changing anything.
The only wrench is that I'm wanting to use the different trans and different TCU, all else stock.

I wasnt aware of any factory application of the e38 and the 4L80. Only trying to give the guy advice to avoid issues with VSS and avoiding "safety mode" He still needs a TCM or an add on controller as mentioned when a 24x swap can get him into a one stop shop with a 411 PCM and a segment swap.

I just bought a 2008 2500 wiring harness with the 4L80e harness and its ECM. I plan on using it on my 2000 firebird v8 swap with a bored out ly6. Am I heading in the right direction wiring wise and ECM? By the looks of it, I need to get a TCM....

Think you've already figured out the DOD, but just in case the top valley cover control is. None DOD is smooth and DOD is not with a plug on the back about where the GEN III cam sensor was located. I don't know for sure, but I thought all L92 motors came with DOD. Those pumps put out a lot of volume and need the bypass in the pan or you get 120 psi and pump up the lifters. That pump has scalloping on the back of it, sort the opposite of what you might expect.
If you ditch the VVT with and LS3 cam and chain or some other combo. (You should be able to find them easy, we have like 40 of them we pulled out on the shelf doing noting. My guess is others have done the same.) You could then run a Holley Dominator system. It can do everything you want other than the DOD and it can self tune almost all of it with a good base program. Something they provide with the system. I use the HP all the time and plan to put the Dominator in my 98 Z28 in about 3 months.
Not sure how much you can sell the stock computer yet as I have plans to do it, but have yet to pull the car a part.

I believe 09/10 is when they went to VVT and AFM. I put a 6.2/6L80/TVS1900 in my 68 C10. I deleted the VVT and AFM because I pushed the power upt to 600-650. It wasn't the easiest or cheapest way to go, but I'm pretty happy with the way it's coming out.

I have just a few things to contribute to this discussion.
1. Using a stock type cam will save your valve train. I run a LS7 cam (very similar to a LS9 cam) in my L92 and made almost 420 rwhp through a Richmond 6spd and a 12 bolt. With me driving the car is over 4000 pounds and traps at 113 MPH, so the power is there.
2. Don't forget that you can also get the Holley Dominator EFI. It will work with the 58 tooth recultor wheel AND offer custom tuning for the 4L80E transmission. If it was my project, I would go this route.

Mast Motorsports sells an ECU that controls VVT functions. They also have several VVT cams for more power. Their stuff isn't cheap, but swapping parts to get rid of VVT isn't really that cheap either. I used their M120 ECU for my L92 install and it works great.

Swap reluctor wheels and front timing cover. Cam and intake manifold too. Complete Ls3 intaKe manifold with ev1 to ev6 adapter plugs and run a 4l80 with a 99-02 Silverado ecu and harness so u can run a 90mm cable tb

Well as I said turning an e38 into a stand alone is no easy task. THe issue is the three ( four actually but anyways ) three computers that run the e38 equipped vehicles. You have the ECM, BCM, and TCM that all communicate through TOS and have a series of go/nogo signals that basically give the green light go in order for all systems to function as per norm. Once you remove the BCM and TCM and try and adapt a different transmission such as the 4L80e behind you run into gremlins that are not easy to overcome. So doable? Yes.
Worth doing? Not imo. If you run a compatible 6L trans + TCM you can piggy back a BCM in there and all systems will work as they should and you can tune it properly. Without doing such if you want to make your life a HELLA lot easier? Drop the crank and do the 24x conversion or buy the Lingenfelter 24x buffer box and run the old school PCM and it will run the engines and 4L80e perfectly well, without making your hair fall out fighting it every inch of the way.
Of course you lose VVT by doing so, but the stock cam is no screaming hell anyways. A nice static grind regular cam in there will wake the thing right up and if you tune it right you'll get even better mileage
