Default ls1 vs sbc motor position

I am swapping a SBC to an LS1. I was wondering what I can expect for dimensional differences between the two engine, specifically on the back end. Will the back of the block (where the bellhousing mounts) be the same distance towards the back of the car from the motor mounts, or will it sit further back or closer in than the SBC?

I will be using my same bellhousing and trans, and I want to know what the driveshaft length will need to be with the LS1 vs the SBC.

thanks
Joe

Just be aware of oil pan clearance with crossmember. you may have to modify it or change to a different pan. If all will clear, then just get stock location conversion mounts and crank spacer for flex plate for auto or conversion pilot bearing and have dowels removed off flywheel for manual. long block should fall into place.

Theres a lot of info you need to list and things to think about because all cars are different in terms of firewall distance and other things like brake boosters etc. that can interfere.....

What motor mounts you use will determine the answer to some of your questions...

The driveshaft length will depend on where the engine placement is...

What trans do you have now, there are dimensional differences and things needed to adapt autos/muncies to an LS1

Hi guys, thanks for the comments. I guess my main question is: If mounted to the cradle in the exact same spot, will the LS1 make the bellhousing+trans sit in the same spot as the SBC with the same bell+trans?

Do I have the ability with motor mounts to adjust the position of the engine forward and backward in the engine bay?

thanks
Joe

It will depend on your engine mounts..... The LS engine alone has no effect on this becuase your trans and engine location will be dependant on the mount you choose.... some move it forward an inch some back an inch some in the factory location and some are adjustable.... If you find one that puts everything in the factory location you will probably be fine in terms of driveshaft size because the trans will be in its stock location....

What vehicle is this going in? We can point you in a better direction on mounts, pans, accessory drive, exhaust, etc.

I have this exact setup in a 64 Nova with a th350. If you put the Ls in the same spot as the SBC it will sit further forward by about 1" or so. I used adjustable engine mounts and moved it back as close to the firewall as I could, which allowed me to use my driveshaft and not have a longer one made.
You will have to use an F-body oil pan to clear the rack.
While the TCI headers are nice, I wish I would have spent the extra money and gone with Church Boys headers. The TCI headers just barely touch the passenger side control arm, tuck up really tight to the body, and sit extremely close to the transmission shift lever.

1in setback mounts will keep the transmission in the same location as the old SBC configuration.
