Advice regarding LSx swaps
I am a newbie here and wanted some info regarding a swap I had in mind.
Basically, I am about to graduate from university soon and will be going back home (Saudi Arabia) for future career prospects. Evidently, when I go back in June I would need a car to drive (considering my budget would be low around 5-10k $)
My problem is that I really don't like the small hatchbacks or sedans that come in that price range. I can get a used Yaris, corolla, civic, malibu, caprice(statesman), lumina (commodore), crown vic, etc etc.
I wanted to go a different route. Rather than the conventional cheap graduate car, I want to swap a LS1 or LS2 into a medium sized car.
The LS1 or LS2 i am taking about are the ones found in
Caprice Statesman or Holden Commodore ( I guess the GTO as well)
5.7 LS1 l98 makes around 315 hp
6.0 LS2 makes around 360 hp
other GM engines are also avaialble like the 5.4 or 5.7 from SUVs and trucks
NOTE: Because of the abundance of the holden statesman and commodore in the eastern part of the country. Parts and engines are easily available.
I have a few option in mind and would like to get a feedback on the practicality and feasibility of the project.
Option 1
Swap the LS1 or LS2 from the forementioned Aussie cars which are really abundant in the KSA to a 88-92 toyota cressida. make it a sleeper.
figures would be around 300-350 hp. I saw a thread in which ls1 was paired with 4l60e and it ran about 12 sec 1/4 when cammed.
Option 2
Swap the Ls1 or Ls2 into an old bmw e36 or any similar german car I could find. might be difficult to maintain for parts of old bmw in saudi.
Option 3
get an old caprice 87-94 and swap the ls1 or ls2 into that. cheap and doable i think.
I cant opt for a miata or rx7 as they are not readily available.
My aim is to get a daily driver out of them, with the capability to surprise and turn a few heads.
I have researched very little but what I have found is that swapping LSx into old caprices is not that difficult comapred to the e36 or the rest.
Cressida swap seems reasonable as well.
Also I don't want a regular GTO, statesman wk or commodore as they weigh a lot and mainly are TOO common.
Ultimate aim that I am going for was a cressida 90 with a Ls2 from commodore or statesman in it.
1500 kg with 360hp. would be quite a good sleeper.
