Default engine start question?

I put an ls engine in my 69 camaro and i'm ready to light it off. It is a lq9 with a ls3 top end. i changed the oil pan and front end accessories along with the top end. My question is do i just start it up or pull the coil pack connection and turn it over with the starter to possibly prime some of the journals? OR….does turning it over with the starter do nothing and will do more harm?? First time messing with a new engine myself and looking for advice…thanks for your input!

Crack it off. A few seconds without oil pressure won't hurt anything.

I primed mine by cranking since it was sitting for 8 months.

I unplugged the computer and cranked til I saw pressure on the gauge.

You can also double check a few things first, like: run the fuel pump and check for leaks.
And check for voltages at various computer pins to make sure.
Over OBD2 for throttle position.

Good luck!

I agree with DW SD, however it is always a good idea to oil prime, the LS pump drives a different way than an old style SBC, so it does not lend itself to conventional priming. Build pressure on the gauge and hit the power. I would cycle the fuel pump a few times to purge the lines. An check for leaks everywhere.

Thanks for the replies! But i guess i have a few wiring issues? I hooked up the battery and the rear lights came on without the key in the ignition…turn the key with new PCM not connected and nothing?? I would think the car would at least turn over with power directly to the MAD system then to the starter??? Guess i'll check the ground then the safety switch to the clutch peddle…need to get to work then later can start my search.

Did you use the starter wiring circuit from the original car wiring harness? Did you remove any of the OE harness?

I using the old starter set up and after market pain harness that was in the car. I'm thinking the non start is from the clutch safety switch…the car will not start with it not working. Anyone know a good way to check the switch?

easy... wire around it (combining 2 sides of the switch). Or just a digital volt meter and look for continuity across the switch when the pedal is pressed in.

Ditto, simply bypass the clutch switch. Did the car run with the current chassis harness in place prior to the swap?

Thanks…thats what it was. I had a mechanical clutch in before that had a long throw and the new hydraulic one does not have as long a throw to trip the switch. So i released the little metal connector and manually made a complete circuit and….click. Now i need to run a relay to the new starter from the battery positive side that i didn't have to do for the small block i took out. So i ordered a new MAD system to wire it up correctly so i don't have a live wire running through my car when i'm not using the starter. So my light off will have to wait a few more days.

Cool. Not sure I understood what you need to resolve, but sounds like you do.

I might suggest doing some more testing first.
Did you pressure test your fuel system?
Can you plug in an OBDII code reader and have it connect? Test throttle position moves with the pedal?
Maybe drop your temp sender in some boiling water and see if it reads 212F?
