I know the t56 Gto uses a small starter. The regular ls1 starter won't fit the bellhousing.

You, sir, are my hero! (Or, quite possibly maniacally insane, there seems to be a non-trivial amount of overlap there...)

Yeah, that kinda goes without saying...

I'm going to be watching this thread because several days ago I read where someone mentioned a mini-starter that can be clocked to ANY position, rather than just one of several pre-drilled hole positions, & with any luck that'll be mentioned again... AND for pics of this vehicular madness that you speak of...

Wow, that's insane... I'm guessing there's an interesting build thread behind those pictures! I started to think "Huh, there's more room under the hood than I would've expected..." - but then I saw that the radiator isn't in yet. Yeah, that's gonna be interesting... Cool project!!

radiator is going to have to go in front of the front support. there's a surprising amount of room to work on the engine itself! any idea where you saw info on this starter?

One of the threads on here, I'll have to see if I can't find it using a search engine...

You're may be thinking of my header build thread.

Almost all of the info about the PowerMaster 9509 starter is located on page 2.

No problems with the starter to date.

The exact measurements are in the link.

I'm not aware of one that has a remote solenoid.

in fact you can have it if you pay for shipping, the headers on my 240 hug the engine quite a bit and everything bolted up but the header laid on the starter, drove it awhile like that until one day I tried to start the car while it was running and broke the clip that holds the plunger in place, starter motor still works but not sure what needs to be replaced other than the clip, I replaced the starter with the LS1 fbody starter and its quite a bit longer than the msd one but its positioned in a way that clears my headers

YEP!! It was your thread (post #27 in fact), thank you!! I think I'm going to spring for one of those starters for my own project - if memory serves, the starter that I have offers two positions with the pre-drilled holes, one runs it into the headers, & the other one knocks it right into the crank(?) sensor... Being able to clock the starter in between those two positions will solve one of the problems I have to deal with!!

yes please take those measurements, i just don't know what else i can do if i don't find something smaller. i'll have to shave down my motor mounts which will be a huge bitch now that the engine is in the car and i can't really get a grinder in there. i appreciate all the help so far. any other options what so ever?

Holy mother of cats, what did that poor little car ever do to you?

I bet your car is going to be an absolute beast when done. You should drag race the LSx Prius.

for more clearance in front, maybe you can source an accessory drive setup from a LS4 car (GP GPX, Monte Carlo SS, LaCrosse Super).

A Prius is a fat pig compared to a Chevette. No comparison.

I think the 9505 Powermaster or the APS/MSD Starter will be your best bet.

MSD starter is 7 3/8"long motor is 3 1/2"wide 5 1/2"tall with solenoid, mounting plate is 4 1/2"wide 4"tall, and the motor can be clock in three different positions to bring solenoid closer to the block, let me know if you need other measurements
