on to the next project: 79 Malibu LS swap nonsense

that's an understatement lol - you can definitely set the clock to 90% of the guys I work with. I will admit working on this thing till 11 or 12 at night after working all day got old but im the type to stick with it till its finished. I probably would have finished it faster if I didn't stay late doing all these damn recalls haha

drove the car to work Monday and Tuesday, decided to take the rear apart to get to the bottom of the awful whine noise it had (ah the joy of buying a "roller"...) what I found was that it had a ridiculous amount of backlash, incorrect pinion depth, and both the ring and pinion gears were pitted. on the positive side it has an eaton carrier lol. I should have a new gearset tomorrow with a rebuild kit hoping to get it back together for the weekend. i ended up having to pull it apart and press off all the bearings to get the numbers off them so i could verify what i needed. luckily i didn't order a bearing kit based on the casting number on the housing... I could go on about how oddball this rear is, ill save that for another time though.

finished the gear install Saturday, ended up switching to a set of motive gears. its 98% better but still whines a little which may be the nature of the rear im not really sure. so after I finished that up I took it for a ride to break in the gearset (drove 10 miles and parked the car to let it cool down) and the left rear axle seal was leaking (!!!!!!!!!!!!) so I changed that this morning. also changed the brake master because the pedal kida felt weak and it was the only thing I didn't change... well the pedal still feels the same lol. then I mounted up a pair or regular 275/60 ET street radials (the 275pro's were cool, but im guaranteed to get caught in the rain) they fit better as well contrary to all the stuff on yellow bullet about them being the same exact size. then I drove it around tonight, so far about 430miles on it.

figured out the issue with the squishy brakes earlier this week: I replaced the booster with a "reman' delco unit, and for some reason I saved the old pushrod out the the booster I took out (had a core charge so I had to send it back)... well turns out the old pushrod was 1/16th of an inch longer which is a lot when it comes to brake pedal feel lol I swapped the pushrods and the brakes feel a lot better!
also cleaned up some of the wiring under the dash, permanently mounted the DLC connector, and been basically driving the car all week to work and everywhere else
I hope to make some passes this coming weekend provided the weather cooperates

Yes I never realized tire size would change things as much as it does .I'm building an 83 cutlass ly6/ 4l80 strange s 60 .trying to pick a ratio I'm prob gonna run 26-27 in tire .thinking of 3.73 the rear is so pricy I want to get it right the first time .strictly street car maybe track once in a while I bet that tech 2 comes in handy. How much can u do with it? Can u tune it with a tech 2?

the tech2 cant tune, I use it to view data basically. i need to start using my HP tuners just haven't had time to sit down and actually mess with it (also would help if i had a clue about basic tuning strategy hah)

I had an 84 with a built 400 in it turbo 350 with 373s back in the day that went but i was running a 15in 60 series tire 70 mph it would rev 4000rpm I'm trying to have the best of both worlds I guess maybe 3.90 would be a better choice when on the highway I like to cruise 75-80 I would like to keep Rpms under 3 k in overdrive at that speed

installed the rear firewall/package tray tonight, got the parts from ScottRodFab, a lot easier than making them myself (on the blue 80 I made them and it took like half a day!) fit and finish was great - unfortunately I didn't take a pic of them in the car, but since the rear seat is in there you cant see them anyway
pic from inside the tunk:
also (because for some reason this kind of dumb stuff interests me) I found this tag on the doorjamb from a shop in Ada, Ohio from the 80's and a super8 motel evaluation card from the same are under the back seat.

made some passes in the car today at island, was pretty windy in the morning but not a bad day otherwise
and this little L33 went almost the same ET in a car that im guessing is 300+ lbs heavier than the Fairmont which is pretty cool. no twisted up launches though it leaves like a shopping cart
and towards the end of the day I noticed my alternator wasn't really charging, finally it took a **** so now I gotta fix that lol
