alt fuse keeps blowing

Default alt fuse keeps blowing

I have a 73 vette with a 99 TA LS1 /4L60e.Blew a fuse at the alternator.replaced it and it blew again.I disconnected my battery, installed a new 30 amp fuse and as soon as the battery is connected POP!What would do this?

This fuse is between your battery and alternator? Sounds like the alternator is grounded. If you've got a multimeter pull that lead off the alternator and ohm that terminal on the alternator to its case or ground.

Need more info, I've never seen a factory installed fuse anywhere near the alternator.

+1 on the alternator internally grounded. Assuming the cable is good shape. Though, I've never seen a 30 amp alternator fuse. If we are talking about the in line fuse from alternator to battery, usually they're alot higher than that depending on alternator size. All the newer cars that come through our shop have 100+ amp fuse.

thats the one one that was in there.Yes it is the wire that runs to the battery.I'm going to check the to see if the alt is grounded.how would something like that happen?

first question does it pop the fuse when you turn the motor on? or as soon as you hook up the wire to the battery? asking because I don't see where a 30 amp fuse should be on an alternator circuit, 100-130 amps on the feed wire, and maybe 10-15 amps on the signal wire. if its popping the feed wire with a 30amp fuse with the vehicle off then yes you have a short to ground problem, remove the wire from the alternator and either use another fuse or a short finder in place of the fuse and reconnect the battery and see if it blows with it disconnected, if it does than wire is touching metal somewhere, if it doesn't blow then the alternator has something that's shorted to the case, or if it blows when you turn the car on is because an alternator is going to draw more than 30 amps, I have a 120 amp breaker on my battery feed line, sorry for the long post, hope it helps

Ok,Yes the terminal was grounded.I pinched the wire under a ground lug.Didnt even see it.followed the hot lead and felt it.Eliminated the inline fuse and I'm getting full charge.Thanks guys now to get this power steering hose thing straightened out
