Thumbs up Power-Steering Pump Squealing Fix/Cure/Solution...

Thought I would help others with this very annoying problem. Here is what "my" problem was after many, many, expensive trial/error tests. The power-steering pulley's metal insert slips on the power-steering pump shaft when cold. After a bit of driving, the squealing would go away. Solution? Remove the pulley, Scotch-Brite the shaft surfaces, wipe with a degreaser, apply red Loctite, reassemble. Do not start the engine for a day to allow the Loctite to harden. Problem cured. Hope this can help others in the same situation.

They also make a "green" loctite to use in "press fit" applications. That stuff will never come loose.

not sure loctite is a good idea on a part that might have to come back off 1 day, just saying

loctite 641 - sleeve retaining compound. works great on cam bearings as well.

Apply heat and it will come apart easily again.

In that case Would engine heat cause it to come loose again ? I know if you run an engine for 15-20 minutes you can't touch any of the accessories cause they will be cooking !

What pump and pulley is this on? The only issues I have had with the p/s pump is spacing the Kwik bracket out to stop a repeated squealing belt

the red stuff (241) needs to be heated to 500 degrees before you can remove it. i think if your engine is getting that hot, you will have a host of other problems.

the green stuff (641) has diminished strength above 200 F but it might still be good enough to prevent slipping. disassembly would be much easier with this compound.

Question Loctite??????

If the pulley is that loose, there's something wrong w/ either the pump shaft or pulley bore dimensions...
Every one I've installed called for some significant "grunt" on the wrench.
