Another option on the steering might be a 2 to 1 ratio changer for the steering shaft itself. Be careful on changing the angles on the steering arms as suggested. You need ackerman.

Take a look if you can fit Viking double adjustable shocks in to those locations. You can then fine tune ride / handling with compression and rebound damping. The stock springs might even work.

I wonder how much trouble it'd be to install a W124 or newer rear subframe and suspension. That'd be a killer package. Many of those W124 suspension parts crossover to current models - it is now old, but a thoroughly modern design.
