Are you talking a round plug transmission or a square plug transmission?

If it's the round plug I believe the internals are different electronically. At a minimum you lose the PWM torque converter control. I know the shift solenoids went electronic around that time, but I'm not sure when. For me 1996 or newer is the year I always look for because they are 100% compatible and easier to spot by the case.

Square plug, no dice.

hmmm Ive never seen square plug on any of the lt1s blazers and silverados maybe what your thinking of is the 4l60 not the 4l60e...

you brought up a good point with the pwm is that only a year 95 thing or how does that work is it on years other then 95 can you give some insight on that

Since so many people use 4L60E, 4L60, and 700R4 interchangeably, I prefer to break these transmissions down by year and external physical attribute. I mentioned the year and physical differences merely for clarification, not to imply there are any vehicles that meet the previous description. Sorry for the confusion.

The 1996 and newer 4L60E transmissions had PWM torque converters for smoother torque converter lockup and a fully electronic valve body. For 1997 a removable bell housing and six bolt tail shaft were introduced. In 2006 or 2007 an input speed sensor was added to the mix like the 4L80E has.

I know for a fact the transmissions I listed work with Gen III and Gen IV engines without hassle - even if they didn't originally back one. I don't mess with the older models because there were so many changes and depending on the year, model and vehicle the transmission may or may not get certain updates.

Personally, I prefer to use 1997 and up transmissions for my builds because they are so easy to spot and I KNOW they have all the updates I need to work with the PCM. There is no other GM transmission that looks like a 1997 up 4L60E with the three piece case to get confused by - especially if it's out of the vehicle. Earlier years require more complicated identification methods which become less reliable in a salvage yard.

In short: Possible - yes. Will you get all the features available - maybe.

Right info, wrong years. 95 was the first year for PWM. To the OP, your trans will work fine with LSx electronics
