Default need help deciding which way to go

I have a 1991 Chevy K1500 I built a 355 for and have been happy with it but I want to swap to an LS motor and get away from carburetor for EFI - can I swap to a LS1/LS6 vette motor and keep my headers?

I have a built 700R4 trans with 3500 stall so I'd like something with choppy idle but need turn key starts and reliability.

looking for any opinions and advice which direction to go and why?

also the truck is 4wd I see all of the mounts/headers for lsx motors say 2wd only - I don't mind dropping the 4wd out, I don't need it in this truck I've got a new duramax if it snows!

Your SBC headers will not fit an LS based motor. You will need LS type headers or use stock manifolds.

LS Motor mount adapters will work in your truck and the motor will fit with the correct oil pan.

If your happy with your motor now then it may be a better idea to swap in a Holley EFI system on it and be done.

sorry, I should have included that my motor currently needs a new cam - I was happy with it when it was running right but often had carb issues etc etc..

from everything I've read going with a 6.0 or 6.2 is what I think is going to make me happy, give me the power I'm looking for and also the peace of mind if I'm using it or someone else needs to use it, it is going to start every time.

I am not stuck on using my headers - just easier if I could have - mine are like new so I have a lot of value in my current parts once I pull them off

ok I've found a complete LQ4 engine with 4L80E transmission with computer, wiring harness, and dash cluster -

to do the easiest swap I'll need:
motor mounts
new headers

someone to program the ecu or ???

Is this pullout from a 4x4 vehicle? Does it include the transfer case? I'm not sure your transfer case input will mate up to the 4l80e output shaft.

Add to your list:
You will need a 58psi fuel system.
You will need to modify the harness.
You will probably need to modify front and rear driveshaft lengths.

thanks for the reply!

It is out of a 2500HD 4WD - I'll check on transfer case, hopefully so!

by 'modify the harness' would it be easiest to just call one of the guys that do harnesses? I have removed most everything that came with the 91 truck when I swapped out to an carb'd small block..

I have a guy that can do my driveshafts so thats easy too.

Yeah you will need your harness and PCM programmed for standalone use.

Contact or order online at Speartech Harness Rework

Check here and see what goes into a rework. Rework

I don't remember where I saw it, but if you're up for a little fabricating I read about one guy that bought a set of headers made for a BBC in your style truck and cut the flanges off and got some LS style flanges and welded them onto the headers and bam he had ls-swap headers for a 4wd.

that sounds like a great idea - I'm guessing it is too much difference to do that with my existing long tubes for my SBC??

since my 700R4 has been built to hold high HP why not hook the 6.0 to it, sell the 4L80 and transfer case?
