Default Swap Picture Needed

Specifically engine clearance.

Car needed 78-81 Camaro.

Clearance at the firewall.

I ran across one article where the person doing his swap said the 1" setback put the LS almost touching the firewall, but allowed for the TH350 to be in the stock location. The article said a zero setback would be better, but forces cross member moving and a new driveshaft.

This was the first complaint I had heard about clearance issues.

I found a good picture of a 67, looked to have nearly 2-3 inches.

Lots of pictures with the right year, but nine showing firewall clearance.

Thanks for the help.

Don't have a pic, but consider that the swap headers are designed to put the engine in a certain location, so take into account header availability along with cross member location and driveshaft.

Also, putting the engine too close to the firewall means the MAP sensor port may need to get cut off the intake manifold to fit. At least it did in my Mustang, the Elco firewall is obviously different.

Get the "Dirty Dingo" slider mounts. use your factory frame mounts and put the motor where you want or needs to be.

Carshop's 1 inch setback will put it the stock SBC location.

This is the engine-to-firewall clearance obtained when using the Hooker 1975-81 F-body engine mounting brackets.

I started out with a ls1 bolted to a stock th350 in its factory location and used basic 1" setback engine mounts. Car was originally sbc 305 powered. There were no problems with firewall fitment. I probably have an inch of space between the oil pressure sensor and the firewall. Using the c5 batwing oil pan and corvette accessories, I also didn't have to cut into my frame for alternator clearance.

Since the ls swap, I changed over to a t56 with the Holley/Hooker conversion trans mount. Things fit very well, but I did have to cut the tunnel a bit to clear the back of the trans and covered the resulting hole with a manual shifter trans tunnel weld-on plate from Year One.

Good to see your post on this one. I never heard how the final outcome turned out for you using the Hooker T56 crossmember in your set-up, did you have to move the crossmember back on the subframe rails to get the fore/aft alignment with the mount correct?

Yes, and I haven't forgotten that I owe you pictures too. I literally crushed my phone with the clutch disc while doing the crossmember swap in May (discovered a slave cylinder leak, which forced me to remove the trans), subsequently got sidetracked with fixing the phone, and then the clutch issue, and then it slipped my mind about getting the pics.

Now the Hooker set is where I use my clamshell mount that came with the car?

Thanks again. That was what I wanted to see.

That's correct, the Hooker engine brackets are installed using the factory clamshell mounts.
