Default fbody longtubes in a 69 camaro/firebird

Has anyone tried to fit 98-02 Camaro/Firebird style headers in a first gen? I know that they won't fit directly, but if I can fit them in without too much denting and mashing then it would be worth it.

Here's what I'm thinking: http://www.ebay.com/itm/220940429764...mtr&rmvSB=true

I have the engine in the stock location, with the stock clutch linkage (z-bar) and steering box.

Just curious as to what others think here. Any advice helps. Thanks.

Coming from someone currently doing a first gen ls1 swap, there's a lot to get in the way. I went with the hooker headers. Amazing ground clearance. IMO you get what you pay for, save up and get ones that are made to fit.

Thanks for sharing your positive experience with the Hooker swap headers mrelectric03. I wish I could say that they would work the same for the OP, but his chosen engine position and desire to use the mechanical clutch linkage will render them non-compatible.

Thanks guys. I thought that the hooker headers were meant to work with the engine almost up against the firewall? Anyway they were too expensive for me. I think for this project I will just end up fabricating my own shorty headers/manifolds. Seems like the cheapest and best option.

On a side note if anyone has made their own headers and had a good experience with a particular tubing please don't hesitate to speak up. Right now if I get the tubing and flanges from scummit it should cost about $100.

The older Hooker 2288HKR headers are what you are thinking of that work with the 1" set back swap plates that set the engine almost against the firewall. The newer Hooker 2275HKR and 2276HKR headers are the ones being referred to in this thread...they are designed to work with the Hooker clamshell style mounts and crossmembers to provide optimized fitment and clearances that no swap plates can. The new mounts accomplish this by placing the engine lower in the subframe than is possible with swap plates and allows a T56 trans be installed with optimized U-joint working angles without having to modify the trans tunnel. You will need 12-16 J-bends to be able to fabricate a typical set of long- tube headers, plus flanges, collectors and O2 bungs, so you're low on your estimated parts cost.

I was tempted to try a set of these shorty headers, but ended up getting the hooker set.

The $100 estimate was for a set of shorty headers, not longtubes.

Those ebay swap headers look tempting; because my engine sits so far back, the last two pipes may clear the steering box. But at least if I make my own then I can guarantee them to fit.

Also, for a stock 5.3 that *might* have a centrifugal supercharger (low boost, probably 6-8 with everything stock) in its future, what size primary tubes would you recommend? I was originally going with 1 5/8 but after thinking about a mild aspirated setup maybe the 1 3/4?

I used the $99 Summit mild steel 1-3/4" header kit, plus their LS1 head flanges and 3" v-bands. I was very happy with the kit. Nobody makes big longtube headers for my application (tube chassis rock buggy) so building my own was my only choice besides stock truck manifolds.

I took my time, had 12 hours into the first side and 10 hours into the other. Only special tools I used were a bandsaw and a welder. I bolted the flanges to the head, tacked the collectors where I wanted them in the chassis and started connecting the dots. After building them I sent them off to Nitroplate to be ceramic coated. All said and done I have less than $500 into them.

I'd build my own set again.
