I've seen 4L60E bell housings on ebay, craigslist and salvage yards. For my run stand project I've got a bell I found on a salvage transmission. Even better, I acquired it for almost nothing.

I'm afraid that finding a T-56 that I can afford is going to be very difficult. I hate the idea of an auto but it might be the only option.

I used my buddies SBC stand for my LS1, 1" setback adapter plates, clam shell motor mounts, and an old SBC truck bell housing. Dropped in like it belonged there. Worked great!

You can still find them out there, but the good deals are getting more difficult to find. I drove to Cali to pick mine up for $1k and it's been in the car for 3 years now with no rebuild needed.

But... $1000 is a big investment in a "I hope it's good." Years ago with a Muncie or similar you could open an inspection cover and take a peek. But a real inspection of a T-56 requires either a test drive or a teardown. Neither are practical when the transmission has been pulled and you're trying to make a deal.
