Default GM Fuel Pump question

I have to modify my GM ZL1 pump for my Nomad project.....I have to modify the length of the pump (adding 4" in length) to make it compatible with the increased depth of the Nomad tank....My question is.....One of the things I have to do is to extend the wires, and in thinking about it.....how does GM have their pumps set-up to have all the wires submerged in gasoline and not have a problem with things shorting out........Humm!!.....and would I be able to just add length to the wires with soldered connections and then use shrink tubing to seal everything up.....Need input from the experts here...........

Pretty sure they use a fuel compatible wire insulation, but I couldn't tell you what it is or where to get it. Same goes for the heat shrink, not sure how gas would affect it. I have seen in AC Delco pumps when they come with a different plug they come with butt connectors, definitely not my favorite. I have also seen aftermarket fuel senders where the insulation has deteriorated away and left exposed wires, you can tell when the fuel gauge quits working.....

Sorry I'm not any more help than that.

The Top section of the tank on the passenger side will be notched out and lowered about 1 1/2" .........I got a GM style flange fitting from Rick's tanks that will be used to position and seal the pump as stock.............

Do you have a build thread for the Impala????

Ken

I know that the OEM GM pump should have some preload on it as it is put into the tank.........I can't remember what that number was........Anyone know ???? (Pump expanded length vs Tank Depth )

Thanks

I live in El Paso Tx. And live about 10 miles from Ricks Tanks, and stop by and talk to Hector on a regular basis, I recently bought my second tank from him, my original tank I bought from him about 8 years ago had the old style fuel pump in it, I wanted to upgrade to the 5th gen. fuel module and he told me for the 5th gen. fuel module you wanted a tank depth of ~ 7-7.5 inches from the mounting ring. For that reason I just bought a new tank from him with the correct depth and correct mounting ring. So depending on what the height of your o.e.m. 5th gen. module is you can do the math, as I saw you were using a 5th gen. module on your project, hope that helps.

The compressed range of the module varies with the overall height. However, the Gen5 LS3 and ZL1 have target compressed heights of 6-1/2".

A the full range of the LS3 is 5-1/2 - 7". The ZL1 is 6 - 7"

Not sure if you have your heart set on the ZL1 pump, but the 4th Gen fbody pumps are pretty inexpensive and I believe they are adjustable from around 9-11".

Default Fuel pump solder wires

Bringing back the dead, I wondered the same thing. I was told that gasoline isn't a great conductor of electricity such as water. The auto industry engineers, when building fuel system for vehicle, knew that the ground and positive current, in a fuel tank, with gas sloshing around, would be safe. I don't know how true this is I would like a mechanical engineer to chime in and explain this theory.
