Default Questions about completely rewiring a car....

I have a 2000 Z28 body that I want to rewire with a Painless wiring or similar wiring harness (both for simplicity and lighter weight, eliminates unnecessary wiring, also with a switch panel, and possibly push button start, although I'd like to keep the key start if possible, also factory harness is cut/damaged/incomplete). The Painless harness includes the fuseblock and dedicated wiring for headlights, power windows, power locks, brake lights, turn signals, etc. My question is this, can I simply cut the pigtails for everything above off of the factory harness, and splice the Painless wiring into the harness, that should work, right? How do I determine what relays (if any at all) need to be used for the headlights, tail/brake lights, power windows, power locks, turn signals, etc?

Thanks, Shawn

Shawn,

Yes, you will need to re-use your existing pigtails. I am about to do the same thing you are doing and I think I will take the time to use weatherpack type connectors to connect the pigtails to the harness. Of course, this is not necessary, I just like the idea of being able to easily unplug almost anything on the car.

You should check out this site and invest the time to read the tech articles. I found the owner to be a really helpful and patient sort. If I need it and he sells it I buy it from him even though I know I can a few pennies elsewhere.

No doubt, that guy at MAD is great to work with. He helped me out years ago when I was fabricating a cooling fan control harness. His wire, conduit, fusible links, etc. are top quality, unlike the junk you get at Pep Boys.
