Arc Welding

Finishing my exhaust system. Will arc welding tail pipe hangers to the frame cause any damage to my 48 Chevy pickup. 07 Classic 5.3/4l60e. Every thing is in, hooked up and running.

Tailpipe hangers

I assume there is a piece of rubber between the part that goes to the frame and the tailpipe. Don't heat the hanger up so much that it melts the rubber.

FWIW I have never been to an exhaust shop and seen them unhook a battery or do anything special before welding an exhaust and the cars always drive out.

I also always disconnect the PCM plugs when welding anywhere on the vehicle. This might be overkill, but would hate to replace a several hundred $ computer and tuning.

Arc welding shouldn't be an issue. I disconnect the PCM when I TIG though. The HF start can mess stuff up.

In my 26 years of welding I've found the best bet is to simply place the ground as close to the piece to be welded as possible. Prevents current hunting ground and running through unnecessary things.
