Default 1999 chevy 6.0?

Hey guys I have a buddy at work who has a 99 chevy 3/4 ton pick up that has a cylinder that's down on compression. He found anot her motor to swap in and offered to sell me his old one. I'm not very familiar with the truck motors, but would like to buy it from him and rebuild it for my nova.
So basically I was wondering if the 99 was a descent year for the 6.0's? And what would be a fair price for this motor? Thanks for the help!

Not sure on what would be a fair price, but this motor will have iron heads and the elongated crank snout where it connects to the flywheel, which will limit your choices of transmissions. I would hold out for a 2001 or newer if you were going with a 6.0.

Are you getting the accessories, wire harness, ecu and stuff? If not you could get a carb manifold, coil controller, and some aftermarket alternator bracket if that's the only thing you need. What transmission is in the nova? It'll be fine if you are running a pg, th350 or th400.

No accessories or harness included. And the nova does have a turbo 350 currently

At my local u pull it junk yard I can get a engine just block and heads for about $350. And that a gamble on how good it my run. In your case if you know the engine is hurt I would offer around $200-250. And if your going to rebuild it anyhow just look for a 2001 and up crank to install while its apart. There have been a couple for sale this summer on here.

heads are not that great. iron limits porting but you can get later al heads esy enough. the crank is longer then the later ones because they were using up some stock of old trans from the sbc for them. you need a spacer to run a ls style tranny or it'll bolt to a sbc style. other then that everything else is the same.

if it's got a bad hole, skip it unless it's damn near free

the long crank might work out ok for you since you're using a gen 2 type tranny

You can swap to aluminum heads for $100. 862/706 aluminum heads are throwaways in my area. I have a few sets of them I'm having trouble giving away lol.

The long crank thing in the 99 isn't an issue if you're using an older trans. It is longer BECAUSE they were still using older style transmissions with them in 99. When they updated the 4L60e and 4L80e, they shortened the crankshaft.

In all honesty, I would look for something else though. Something that is complete with wiring/harness/ECU/accessories, or you'll spend a fortune and a lot of time piecing it together.
