Default Fan Mech or Elec?

I'm in need of a cooling system at this stage of my build and not sure how to go. I have a truck LS2 from an 07 TB SS, it did not come with the mechanical fan setup though i did just spot one on ebay for a C note. Question, do I loose anything my going with the mech. fan or should I be looking for an electrical fan setup. My electrical skills are weak at best but my fab skills are many but my wallet is getting thin.

Let me know. Thanks, Tony

Electric fans. Get a set of Dodge Intrepid fans from a pick-n-pull type place. They are two speed dual fans. Mine have never been above low speed in my s10 with a cheap Jegs radiator and the ls1 pcm controls them like stock.

Does your water pump have the threads to
screw the mechanical fan on? Then you would
need a fan shroud.
I would do as previously mentioned and get
scrapyard elect. fans.

Yes I do have that "Bell" style water pump pulley with a large center acorn style nut and what appears to be 4 small threaded holes around that nut. I have my factory shroud and stock radiator in working condition. 1968 Chevelle

If I do go to the junk yard for elec. fans do I need just the fan or will I need to grab other parts eg. connectors, controllers and the like.

Thanks you guys, Tony

I 100% agree with getting a "factory" electric fan setup. I also have a S10. On mine, I have the ford contour dual fans. As long as you stay away from the newer PWM fans, you won't need any controllers or anything. Look for something up to say 2002-2004. Take a tape measure and start measuring whatever you see. I found the set that fit like they were made for my aftermarket radiator. I cut the electric harness off on the other side of the connector so I can disconnect it like a factory install.

I had 2 10" aftermarket fans, and in 3 years, they went from cooling great, to not cooling so well, to 1 actually going out, and causing me to overheat. For some reason, the aftermarket electric fans, just are not as good as a factory built fan. BTW, my Ford fans never kick on high either. Ford really does make some good fan setups. I know alot of guys use the dual fans from a Taurus. I hear they flow ~3000cfm.

What EFI harness are you using? It's probably already equipped and ready to control fans if you bought an aftermarket one.

Grab the relays with the fan. A mechanical fan can move more air, it has a bigger motor, but like said LS motors are typically easy to cool so all that air flow isn't needed. The big advantage is they turn off when not needed so no drag on the motor

I got a single taurus 2 speed fan for $20 at a JY. I never bothered to wire up the high speed. It doesn't run when the car is moving.

I do not have a harness yet but I'm going with PSI. Well I think you guys settled it for me, I'll head to the salvage yard.....once it cools off here in Maryland
97 and humid today.

Thanks again, Tony

What vehicle is this going in? What dimensions on the radiator? You can probably find something that fits really well with that info.

F body fans work well if they fit your radiator correctly. Popular swap on newer body style pickups. I grabbed a used setup cheap, works great. Much better than the twin ebay fans I had on previously when I ditched my belt driven fan.

Consider both.
A mechanical fan and an electric activated by a temp switch and/or trinary if you have AC.
I've been running that setup on one of my swaps and works great.

Gary, no I do not have AC but tell me does a factory truck (TBSS) fan have the capacity to run electrically?
I did find an 03 Windstar fan setup on Craigs list for 35 buck and I guess shipping and a factory truck fan on ebay for 100 free shipping.

Thanks, Tony

My 411 and 05 truck ecu have the capability to run 2 electric fans. I'm sure yours does too.
You can probably unbolt a factory mechanical fan at pick and pull for $20. Plenty out there.
I'm running twin windstar fans on my 72 Olds, they do work well, but draw a lot of current. You cant run them through the factory fuse box.
I actually prefer the mechanical/single electric combo in my other car, especially with AC. Mechanicals rarely fail and move A LOT of air. Best of both worlds.
Electrics cool better if you're running slow, in traffic, AC on, etc. On the mechanical/electric setup, I'm using the trinary swith and an adjustable temp switch on the single electric. That way, I can adjust temp set point without reprogramming the ecu.

Taurus and crown vic fans rival even some of the most powerful aftermarket ones out there. Snag one of those with the connectors and relay and you'll have setup with great potential!
