Pulling a 5.3 advice...
I am a Jeep guy looking to swap an lsx into my 2 door 96 Cherokee XJ.
I have swapped a few Jeep 4.0's but never an sbc.
Tomorrow I am going to the jy to pull a 5.3 LM7 out of a 01 Silverado.
Just wondering if you can give any advice to a sbc newb on this pull. I will be by myself. I will be cutting the exhaust after the O2's. I will not be saving the harness but I will grab the pcm. I also will not be getting the trans since it is an 4l60 and 4wd. I have a 2wd Cherokee.
Any advice you can give me would be fantastic, thank you!
But I agree pulling the engine and trans together. I've done this a dozen times and it is FAR easier to pull them together. It typically takes me 2 hours to pull entire engine/trans/transfer case. The last time I dropped the trans out by itself too 5 hours.
Something to do with a 4x4, remove the intake manifold when pulling. Otherwise you'll have a hell of a time getting the oil pan to clear the front differential.
Had to cut some wires on the harness but I got the ecm. This can be programmed to work with 2wd instead of 4wd, correct?
Took me around six hours on my own and have never turned a wrench on any lsx so I think I did alright.
I did miss that middle bolt on the driver side of the bell housing. I got lucky and it snapped the bolt out of the bell housing instead of the block.
I was not going to pull the transmission because it was a 4l60e and every where I look people say they are weak so I will be looking for a 4l80 instead.
Looking forward to my foray into the LS world.
You will probably be seeing me around here a lot now.
like joe said pull the intake so you dont bust that up. i take off the coils too.
using the picker at the junkyard is always fun. it's usually a home made gantry with a rusty chainfall. bring some PB blaster and lube the sucker up really good. I like to use a 10ft nylon tow strap rather than chains.
good luck. junk yard engine pulling is always fun.

They charge us here to use their crappy picker. Sometimes it's broken, or doesn't fit in or around the vehicles and Sometimes we just have to improvise...
I would like to personally thank all the Morons who worked on this vehicle the day before I got there. They stole the injectors by cutting up the engine harness, damaging the intake and fuel rails to steal said injectors, Removed the transmission and the exhaust pipes, took the computer and the front lamp wiring harness, although you weren't smart enough to pull the 2 pins and instead cut the wires.
Thank You for leaving the best part behind and making it so easy for me to remove!!!

I think it was harder to push the hoist up to the gate than pull the engine, lol. Every time it would swing forward it would slow me down then when it would swing back it would speed up.
Only real issue I had was I didn't realize there is an odd bolt from bell housing to engine on driver side and I missed it. When I pulled the engine it snapped the bell housing and not the engine, lucky there!
Cool thing is I found the registration, 171,000 miles in January. Truck was totaled so running when it wrecked.
