Help: Carb conversion/distributor options
I am looking for ideas for the dampener and also water pump. Here's the skinny.
I plan to use my LQ9 powered Model A for regular street use. No high revving racing or anything like that.
Because I am running the front mount distributor I am running into issues that I am sure others have.
Here are my questions.
1) Can I use and underdrive balancer/crank pulley so long as it clears the front timing cover? Summit and others say that I cannot and that I need to use the ATI unit
2) Because the stock water pump doesn't clear the new timing cover, can I use the stock pump by using spacers.
I will only have an alternator pulley along with water pump and balancer/crank
i can machine my own brackets and other spacers to get proper pulley alignment. I just want an alternate option over the ATI. Again, I know it's a quality product but because I do not plan to run a blower and I am basically a stock application, what do you all with the experience suggest. I do need to save dollars where I can.
Thanks in advance.
Sincerely, Grant
Are you wanting a distributor for any certain reason? I would just toss on an MSD ignition controller setup and be done with all the hassles of the distributor.
Thanks for the response!
To clarify, I am running the distributor because the car is a 1930 model a coupe that chopp d and channeled and I really want it geared more towards the classic look. It'll even have old style VCs.
I did bite the bullet with the ATI piece just a little bit ago. I still cannot help but think there is another way. That is now a moot point.
My next step will be to make the stock water pump work. No way will I bring myself to spend that kind of money on the wegener "special" pump. I will make the stock pump work some way, somehow! :-)
I will say that it would be nice to see someone post up if they have run something other than the ATI unit.
Last night I machined my original crank pulley down just to see if it would clear the timing/distributor cover and it would by 1/8". I couldn't use it because it was not perfectly concentric. My guess is that before I got the engine it had become out of round. It was noticeable when I chucked it up in the lathe.
