Those are some wicked rear ends! I have done a couple others that have held over 600. They weren't used in drag cars with non-stop abuse but the power was on tap. I strengthened the tubes and welded the guts out of them as well as a girdled cover. The internals are Auburn pro posi with Richmond gears and USA Standard chromoly axles. She is as built as I can make her. Plus I found a new old stock 1350 yoke so I have a little extra ujoint.

I went so far as to call the POCI folks and ask them the value of my box stock Tempest Convertible. Even the convertible body doesn't net more than $20k in original or restored condition since it's not a GTO, so I say f*ck it - treat it like a blank canvas and make that old steel new.

That was a pretty easy project, from start to finish was only about ten hours, I think it really makes the car. I am making custom grill inserts and matching inserts for the scoops that should really make it stand out.
I plan to run the 4L65. I am actually building this thing for economy, as I plan to drive it every day (I'm in CA and can have the top down 300 days a year). The LS3 is more efficient than my old 326, which got 22 mpg with the Rochester 2 bbl. The fact I'll get 430 hp isn't lost on me, but I'm not trying to build a monster.

Just curious....will the LT1 (94-97) Backing plates work as well since utilizing the cables from the same model year? or just LS1?

Sounds like an awesome combo! I am not sure if you will need to alter your tunnel with that transmission or not, I have never dealt with an automatic. You should get great mileage with that setup.

To be honest I do not know. I have a 35th anniversary Camaro so I am familiar with those brakes and I liked the internal parking brake. The cable for the 94-97 was longer and required no modifications on my part to work properly. I just have no working knowledge of that generation rear brake. Let me do some research and I will get back to you.

Just a quick search shows me that the rotors look similar but different parking brake and the backing plate is different, as long as the bolt pattern, which it should be, is the same then you can make it work.

Hey...any updates on your build?
Started in on my 66 LeSabre and took your info about the Gen4 Camaro rear disc. Apparently the gen 3 work as well. Thanks again for that info.
