Default VSS question

I have a 2001 LS engine connected with a painless wiring harness. The vehicle is a 2002 chevy with the 4l60e trans. I had to disconnect the original VSS plug for the one on the new harness. How can I make the original speedometer work with the new harness? I'm afraid if I just splice the new wires into the old I might short something or have some kind of feedback.

Any experiences guys?

This is kind of vague, you may get a better response by letting us know what kind of 2002 Chevy it is. But, there should be a dark green wire in the new harness for the speedo, that would just go to the signal input for the speedometer.

It's an Astro van. There are no provisions for a speedometer with the new harness. It is only to make the engine run in whatever chassis you put it in.
