317 heads aren't ideal for 5.3, but throwing boost at it will get you where you need to be

I have a 5.3 bored to 346 with 317's. It is designed for a turbo or blower. The 317 is a modified LS6 head with bigger combustion chambers. I run them to get the compression ratio down a bit. Be sure to use LS6 head gaskets with them.

If the plan is to stay NA, I would look for a cam that optimizes the dynamic compression ratio (low overlap).
