Modern LS6 Project
1970 Chevy Malibu 2dr coupe:
Purchased from a young couple going through divorce. He obtained it at an auction. It was stolen in Iowa, VIN tag popped and no title. He had crappy bodywork done, a miss-firing 400CI SBC with a 350TH and 10 bolt rear end. I purchased a rebuilt 1970 12 bolt rear end with 3:73 gears out of an LS6 Chevelle from a forum member in Minnesota.
2002 Pontiac Trans Am LS1 and 4L60E
Turned out to be an LS6 block, intake, etc, but with 241 heads and 29k miles on the clock. DBC. Tore her down, installed a Howard's cam, new ported 243 heads, valves, springs and a 165 degree thermostat. Placed on a dyno with a carb and output was 505hp/489trq. Installed a 2800rpm TCI torque converter to match the cam and remarried the trans to the block. Reconfigured the PVC breathing system to include a catch can and keeping the "mist" out of the intake. This is now an LS6. Seems fitting for a 70 Chevelle to have a modern LS6. I'm applying for MDRN LS6 license plates

The Work
Looking closer at the crap body work, I decided to pull the body from the frame. I noticed two soft spots in the frame, so I had a local shop blast, repair and paint the frame. The body had new floors and 1/2 quarters butchered in but since there's no VIN and this car isn't anything special....I will deal with what's there for now. This is being built as a driver. The LS and 4L60E were installed perfectly using motor and trans mounts, as well as the oil pan, from Muscle Rods. No modifications to make anywhere, great fit.
At this point I decided to purchase all new tubular suspension, including front and rear including sway bars. Standard springs in the front and 1" lowered springs in the rear. The front was dropped with 2" drop spindles and all parts were completely replaced. Newly painted frame, fresh 12 bolt rear and new tubular suspension all around looked good. Thinking of my wife, and her safety, I splurged and purchased a complete Signature Series big brake kit from the Right Stuff and tighter steering box from AGR.
New body bushings and the body on. Tanks Inc EFI fuel tank with gauge sender and fuel pump installed. Rather than modify the existing LS wiring harness, I purchased a new one from Current Performance. I chose them because they tied their harness into the new American Auto Wire harness I needed. The installation was pretty straight forward on everything and looks great. Vintage Air direct fit complete heating and cooling system installed. This was a bitch of a job. Vintage Air needs to find an easier way to mount the unit under the dash.
New Glow Shift gauges mounted into a Covan style dash insert looks pretty good after using undercoating to mist the insert so the texture was close to the original dash. Spending a little time on the fit really paid off as everyone who's seen it says you can't tell unless you know Chevelle's didn't come with that dash configuration. USB chargers in the glove box installed as well.
Sound barrier installed. Changed the steering column from non-tilt column shift to tilt floor shift and found a way to get a B&M Mega-shifter installed into a factory console without looking like a hack-job. Pics will come once the final assembly is complete, but the mock-up looks great! A little beating on the floor and the short arm option from B&M sets the height. A little creativity to blend the boot to the console cover finishes it off. New headliner, carpet and a great find on a rebuilt rear seats start the interior rebuild. I will be going with new TMI Sport buckets vs stock, they fit better.
Dual Pass radiator with trans cooler installed from Muscle Rods (Dewitts). 2 core with 2 electric fans (4 core rubber mounts). One of the toughest parts to get here has been the hoses. The Muscle Rods motor mounts set the engine back almost 2", so using hoses others have used was a wild goose chase. O'Riely Auto Parts MBH 207795 is your upper and Gates 22437 for your lower and you'll breath easy. It's like they were made for this configuration, trimmed 1" off the bottom (thermostat side).
To roll around, baby's got new shoes. 18" Torque Thrust II, polished. FYI, The Right Stuff Signature break kit requires 18" or larger wheels.
More to come....
Tanks Inc EFI system.
Much rougher body than it appears.
Incorrect hoses, the 20450 lower and 22358 upper did not work as I read they would. My guess is the motor placement.
Dash in, fold up Pioneer touch screen connected as well.
