The folks selling used engines very rarely go to that much trouble packaging for shipment. Shrink wrap a god-send for them....

Yup and it worked for this shipment. I'm sure there are also people out there with broken oil pans as a result, but considering we are just talking about setting the engine on the ground gently with a hoist I think life is good.

Agreed - static, spread load not a problem. Point/impact loads - potential broken pan. With shipping - accidental impact loads happen. If careful around shop, hopefully they don’t happen.

After I get these blasted broken bolts out, I'm going to be mating the engine and trans together outside of the car. Right now I"ve got the motor suspended on a wooden stand where the pan isn't touching. WIth what I've read here I feel confident enough to sit the motor down still and slide the trans to it long enough to bolt it together. I'd like to tighten the converter bolts while it's out of the car, but I'm not sure how that's going to work while hanging from the engine hoist.

If your paranoid, use the old tire trick.

Don't overthink it. Just don't drop it.

Tire easy for temporary or transport. Perfect for a truck ride taking it home.

For garage floor I use a 6x6 block to balance the front and a used towel for a Charmin soft barrier to the concrete floor. The rear of the pan basically is on the floor.

I ended up sitting the engine on the ground during the installation using cardboard on the concrete. Thanks guys.
