Default Oil Pan Flush With Block

Hello all,

I just installed my F body oil pan. I tried to get the pan lined up perfectly flush with the back of the block but I couldn't get it to go all the way. I hit it with a rubber hammer and this was as far as I could ever get it to go. Is this close enough or will this cause problems. The pictures show the distance: I'm not sure what I could do to get it to go forward any further.

Thanks,
Brandon

You need to put the straight edge on the trans mounting flange part of the block to make sure it's even with the mounting flange part of the oil pan to make sure they line up. Otherwise you risk cracking something when you tighten the bolts since the trans bolts all the way around unlike the older transmissions that only bolted to the block. Hope that makes sense?

I think I got it. I haven't been able to get back out to the engine after work, but hopefully tomorrow, if the weather holds off. Thanks.

You can leave it how it is for now, then just loosen the bolts before the trans is mated. Use the BH as a straitedge

I see. I was using the straight edge on the area. I checked the flat area of where the bolts mount against the sides of the pan.

Are you putting the flat edge on the rear cover? Is that what I’m seeing here? The rear cover has nothing to do with this. The transmission doesn’t bolt to the rear cover, it bolts to the block and the oil pan, how on earth would that cover have any effect on how the transmission bolts up? Cmon man, you really have to use some common sense here.

I was, in fact, not using a straight edge across the correct areas. Thanks guys for the information.
