Default What are the types of Sanden compressors

I'm trying to do a lot of research on compressors. I need to know something before I go further.

Am I correct in that the two types of Sanden compressors that people choose between for their swaps are the 508 and the SD7 (also called the SD7B10) ?

Thanks,
Brandon

Holley refers to them as SD7 and SD508. And they have brackets for both of them

The SD7 is pretty much the most widely used compressor for ls swaps, used by aftermarket ac company’s. It works exceptionally well with our ls swaps because it’s sized well, much like Oem units, and it handles engine rpm well, probably better than most.
I just completed a Vintage Air swap on my Chevelle. I have Holley front accessory brackets, which came with the Sanden SD7. The Vintage Air system works well with the compressor. Manifolds are available in many configurations for the SD7, and are plentiful. Hope this helps you...

Thanks for the input. Is the SD7 a newer version of compressor than the SD5, or just a different version?

The main difference is how the mounting tabs are arranged. Plumbing is a bit different too. Both are very good compressors.

What about the Sanden's compared to the old r4 compressors? I seem to see a close to equal number of both, perhaps a slight skew to the Sandens.

I have HEARD the R4 can be more problematic, but that might be "internet wisdom". GM used thousands of them. They are a shorter and bigger diameter pump. I think it comes down to availability and what other parts you have.
Holley has brackets for all 3.

You’ll need to know what’s compatible with your system also, before you buy. I’ve no idea, but I’d ask before buying.

The sd7 is a way better compresser than the R4. I’ve ran both. The sanden seems to use less hp, handles rpm very well, and
works well with the Ac system in my 83cutlass. Just make sure you buy a genuine sanden . There are a lot of Chinese copy’s

Thanks guys for the responses. From what I've looked up and been told so far, I just need a fix compressor to go with my system (1978 caprice).
