Default Tach signals!!!

Can anyone tell me if the tach signal from a E38 PCM is the same of a 2000 Camaro PCM.

trying to eliminate possibilities.
I either have a bad connection in my harness, the PCM tach signal is not compatible (on all the v8s2000 webpage) everyone is able to get tach from a fbody/ls1 PCM) but im not ls1.
I have not yet bought a dakota digital sgi (VSS speed healer) and saw the dakota digital STA... and figured it might be able to correct both my problems if some of these possibilities are true and it does what i think I need done if the signals are not correct. But thats a lot IFs I need some expertise.

Okay so got some useful information from a friend and it sounds like my research was right. I need a resistor to pull up voltage. Any guesses on size resistor.

1k ohm resister with fused 12v ign on one side. The other side ties into the tach signal wire.

BUT all the new stuff is canbus.

Im prertty sure the resister want fix it. dakota digital makes a canbus interface. It plugs into the obd2 port and gives u all your gauge read outs. Tach, speedo etc.

Speedhut has a set of these gauges as well.

But I think with the right settings on the e38 pcm and correct resistor it goes into my stock ECU and throws it back out to my stock instrument panel. Or so I beleieve may be the case.

So this is the ls1/t56 installation manual for a 99-09 S2000 ... if this holds true to ls1s and it needs a pull up resistor for ls1 gtos I should be good correct? Once again im not sure how e38 send out there tach signal. Is it digital? Idk...

I'm using an E38 with an LS3 from a 2008 Corvette and I had to install the resistor as well. Once I wired it in, my tach worked perfectly. Link listed below for a pic.

I was never able to get a tach signal from the ECM, and I ended up splicing into one of the coil wires per direction of speedhut (my tach manufacturer). What terminal on the E38 did you use to successfully get a tach signal?

I'm also using a 2008 Corvette ECU with a new crate LS3 - I did it just as Alex describes above (same diagram PSI Conversion supplied in my directions). The 1000 ohm resistor adjusts the 5V ECU tach signal for a tach that's expecting a 12V signal. The ECU puts out a "4 cylinder" signal - so you need to set your aftermarket tach to 4 cylinder mode. If you have an OEM V8 tach, it's going to be off by half.

same here, I have a 2007 vette e38 and BP harness, nice thing about Speartech if you tell them you have aftermarket gauges they do the 1k resistor right in the harness...

It's called a pull-up resistor. pretty much every computer p59 and newer need it to use a non-canbus tach

Its needed for any tach expecting a 12V signal when used with an ecu outputting a 5V tach signal. Some aftermarket tachs (newer) have a 12v or 5v switch - set it on 5v with a 5v ecu - no resistor needed.

How about you first tell us what brand and model gauge youre using? And as far as which wire to use from your harness, you should have already studied lt1swap.com and have that answer.

I thought 8lug was trying to help - but I think the answer is in the OPs post - converting an S2000 I think, could be wrong, with its OEM tach.

Sorry if "I" came off as a jerk, but when someone starts with "How about...." it's a little attitude-ish, especially considering who said it. It's a pattern...

An 8 lug pattern. I see what you did there.

Stewie - do you know if your tach is expecting a 5V signal or a 12V signal? Once that issue is resolved - and you've used the resistor (or not) - you should be good to go as it's a 4 cylinder tach to start with.
