Default Stock air intake question

I'm moving a fourth gen 5.3 from a 2010 tahoe into a '87 chevy pickup. I'm intending to move the intake and filter box over with no changes. The intake has a bulbous lump that hangs down from the intake tube. There's no hoses or sensors attached to this lump. This "thing" was cracked off due to the crash. Can I simply remove this extra piece from the intake, cover the hole with fiberglass tape, and still accurately use the stock MAF settings? One reason for removing this, is I still might go with a mechanical fan. If I do so, that lump will have to come off.

The piece I want to remove is in the lower right of the photo.

Yep you should be able to remove that and still use the stock MAF settings. It is just there to quiet some of the intake noise. Removal should not significantly affect the airflow to the MAF

Thanks a lot for the response! I was just afraid it had something to do with the air flow characteristics. Your answer makes sense.

It's called a Helmholz resonator which is a fancy way of saying what G-Body described. Click the words to see the Wikipedia description.

Doug... I can't take you anywhere. Haha!

I've used several of these stock intakes and tubes on various swaps...I have always removed these resonators without a problem.
