Default 5.3 Oil Sender

Anyone know if the oil sender on an 04 5.3 liter can be used for a stock style electric oil gauge on something like a 69 Chevelle?
There are three wires going to it rather than the one wire (2 with ground) on the SBC. Or must I use the one from the SBC which would be harder to replace in the future?

I just replaced the 5.3 sensor with a adapter from Metric to 1/8 in pipe and run a mechanical gauge. You could probably tap into the oil cooler by-pass and tap it to 1/8 inch pipe and run the early model sensor also.

or tap into the oil cooler adapter down by the filter , the computer likes to know oil pressure , you are asking about wires , i take it you have aftermarket gauges ?

Pugsy - most folks look for a place to simply add the sender that your stock gauge wants.

Thanks guys.
I will install it somewhere. I was just wondering if the sender that comes with the engine could run the older gauge.
I have a 1/8" NPT tap so, no problem there.

Yes, aftermarket stock looking gauges. I imagine a 69 OEM gauge had the capillary tube system. Mine is electric.

Similar situation for me -- left the factory pressure sensor to talk to the ecu; I installed my analog gauge's (VDO) sender in the oil cooler circuit -- and it sends a signal to my OEM VDO gauge.

I read the ECM doesn't need the oil pressure info. I have it de-pinned already.

Depending on ECU, I think it's optional. It can be used to shut down the fun if a certain amount of pressure isn't available. Some folks choose to have it enabled; others not so much.

Thanks. It's an 04, #12586242.
Shut down on low pressure sounds like a terrific thing. Lord knows I don't spend all my time looking at the gauge.

Like this I guess. The F Body pan came with this boss ready to go. Just drilled thru and tapped.
Found a cheap gauge for the test stand.

Oil taken care of. Can I just use the HP Tuners to watch the engine temp while testing?

No need to spend money on HP Tuners. Buy an inexpensive Blue Tooth OBD II adapter for your OBD II port and then run the "Dash Command" app on your phone to see all sorts of parameters at work inside your PCM. "Torque" is another good phone app for this but I don't like it as well as Dash Command.

Dont think this is possible on a GenIII engine. The newer ones use oil pressure for the AFM/DOD crap, but I have never seen one that would shut down because of low oil pressure.

I guess I don't need to re-pin the wires back in then.
