Default GM Output Speed Sensor That Does BOTH?

Guys, I'm at the next road block on my '69 GTO project. This car has the Rally Pack gauges in it and I wanted to keep the factory stuff... So, I set up the transmission (4L60E) to run a mechanical speedometer. I basically put the 700R4 output shaft into it, and also the correct drive and driven gears, and also the correct extension housing and speedo bullet.

Now, I have to figure out how to get an electrical vehicle speed signal back to the PCM so that it will know when to command the shifts. Is there an OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR that has BOTH mechanical & electrical outputs on it?????? If so, can you link me to it.. That would be the easiest thing to do.. If such an animal does not exist, I will modify the extension housing to hold a speed sensor on the opposite side, and put the reluctor ring back on butting it right up against the plastic gear. I don't like to have to do hack work like that, but if I have to go that route I will do it as professionally as possible. I can TIG weld aluminum, and I also have a lathe and knee mill. But... an off the shelf speed sensor that can do BOTH would be the cats meow.

LOL - man have I been there with this on mine! I ultimately 1) bought a GPS unit that drives the stock cable speedo - no more speedo woes no matter drivetrain, gears, tranny, tire size; 2) use pickup/driveshaft magnets to run DBW Dakota digital cruise control - works as well as the OEM units on our daily’s; 3) put a Fox body Mustang VSS into my Tremec to send the sine wave voltage signal to E38 Corvette ecu. All works flawlessly. Originally I hand cut a 13 tooth reluctor to mount between driveshaft and pinion and “read” it with the GM T56 pickup. But the signal wasn’t clean/strong enough to provide a reliable speed input to the ECU.

Next step is to explore whether the VSS signal can be used (split?) to send to ECU AND cruise control.

This car will not have cruise control so no need to worry about that.

I was certain that I had seen a vehicle at some point in the past that had a speed sensor that had BOTH a mechanical output, and also an electrical output.

You mention Ford having such a device. What vehicle should I use as search criteria? If I can put my hands on one, I may have to explore what needs to be done to make it work on my application.

The Fox body VSS units have the speedo gear on the end that slides into the tranny. And then the speedo cable goes into the VSS. But you've got to have the right 'worm' gear on the output shaft to drive that speedo/vss gear. Don't think it would be easy to adapt. I'd use the 4L60 VSS for the ecu and put the cable speedo on a GPS box. That's the end of messing with different ways to drive your speedo.

This is one way I found to do it when I built my wagon...

Link> 4l60e mech/electrical speedo

More than I wanted to spend...I went with a Dakota Digital ECD-100 to run the factory speedo in my wagon. Worked good on my 4l60 and now my T56.

Yep.. $650 could go towards a turbo kit... I will move forward with modifying my current extension housing to hold the factory speed sensor on the opposite side of the mechanical speedo drive.

I will post up results when I have something that will work.

I had a factory one off of a Jeep if I remember correctly on my old TPI set up. It screwed on the 700r4 and the speedo cable screwed on the other side. Cant remember what year it was off of, but that was 20 years ago iso the cars n the junk yards were probably 10 years old at the time, so maybe late 80s or early 90s?

350SS-THAT is exactly what I was looking for! I just hope CattleAC from above does not see this... It would have saved him $600..... Or, maybe it was not available when he was looking to set his up. That definitely saves me some welding, fab, and machine work.

I just ordered one.

Oh no, I wasn't going to spend that kind of money on my speedo...hell I usually spend about half that on a complete running LS powered Suburban...

Anyway, I saw that when I purchased my ECD-100. (I think I gave about $250 for it when I purchased it.) I just didn't realize that pulse generator was a cable pass through or I would have mentioned it to you. I always have used 4l60's, 4l80's, or T56's in my swaps so it wouldn't have helped me anyway.

Keep us posted on how it works. I'd like to know if I ever need one.

I just got the Dakota Digital sending unit in today. It looks like it is going to work. It is a direct pass through on the mechanical cable side. I may end up having to buy a digital converter as the electrical sending side is 8000PPM... Not sure if that will work with my PCM as is, or if I need to buy the converter. They specifically sell a digital converter to be used with this pass-through sending unit. It's another $82.

I ordered the sending unit through Amazon yesterday, and it's here today. No, I am NOT a prime member... Even without PRIME it was here the next day.
