I recently took my steering wheel off to change out the blinker stalk. I only took it down far enough to take the plastic blinker switch off, took the stalk off, and put it back together. After putting it back my gear selector is now off. I'm not sure what I could have accidentally altered to change this. The car is a 1978 Caprice.
I think that year of GM the gear selector needle is just a simple cable pull. One end of the cable pulls the needle. The other end has a metal clip that attached to the collar on the column - just slides onto the edge of the collar (near the bottom?) that moves with the shifter lever. All you have to do is slide it a little to the left or right to adjust
. Very simple system actually.
Thanks for the response and sorry I realize I didn't explain what I meant clearly. The actual gear shifter is what is not aligning properly. I don't have an indicator needle any longer because I replaced my dash with a Dakota Digital. When I move the shifter to where drive should be, it is in neutral.
Oooohh, okay I see. Column shift or floor shift? Every linkage has adjustment somewhere. Not sure how it managed to get out of kilter but you're going to have to crawl under and lengthen the linkage at it's adjustment point.
Oh OK. It is column shifted, so there's an adjustment that can be made under the car that's not very difficult. I was thinking that since it had been misaligned through the column I would have to go back in and reset it there, but if I can just readjust under the car that would be much easier.
