Just suggestion. There are brackets that use both bolt holes on the oil pump. Might hold the oil tube better and help hold the O-ring in place better?
Just looked at my stash of LS parts. On a stock L92 oil pick up tube out of a pickup it's a red O-ring. No step on the tube. My memory is not the best but is the larger o-ring blue in color?

the pickup tube that's on this motor only uses one bolt but I do see provisions for a 2nd on the pump

the trashed O ring is an greenish blue. There is a red ring in the intention on the pickup tube and the new O ring I got from the parts store ( they are pretty good) is Red.
is this the right O ring ?

Another question... what do you guys reccomend to do with the oil pan gasket? Just put it on by it's self or add Rtv with the gasket?

Use RTV ONLY at the intersections of rear cover/block/pan. Do not coat the gasket. That is asking for trouble, and is just not needed.

O-ring is selected based on the OD of the tube. Use a caliper to measure tube diameter and match it to the proper o-ring. GM uses a different color code than the aftermarket. I would use a real GM o-ring so there's no mistakes. Look up instructions online for a Melling oil pump and the information will be there.

Check the fit.....it should be snug over the pickup tube and snug (takes a bit of work to get it in) going in to the pump. If you have to work really hard to get it over or in (?!?) it ain't the right o-ring. Use a bit of engine oil on both the o-ring AND the rubber sealing bit of the oil pan gasket. I didn't use any RTV anywhere when I changed pans on mine. Shouldn't need it.

As mentioned above - I'd go to the dealer and get an o-ring for an '04 5.3L for whatever the motor came out of. edit - assuming pickup tube and pump are both stock....

I went to the dealership to make sure I definately had the right O ring and I did, it's the red one.
But unfortunately my next couple weeks are swamped and I won't be able to put it back together to check if that's the only issue I had.
I'll update when it's back together

Thanks for everyone's help !! This site is great !

I'm back at this tonight. I replaced the O ring with a Red one the dealer said is the one I need. Put on a new oil pan gasket. I primed the oil pump through the port on the front drivers side. I read a thread about the oil system being air locked ( ?) So they recommended pulling the oil filter and turn it over and see if you get oil to the filter. So I tried that. Turned it over for about 5-10 sec and stopped and oil poured out the port for the filter.

is that correct though? Shouldn't oil be going to the filter while it's turning over??

Then I put the filter back on and went up top and turned it over with the valve covers off. I turned it over for a good 30 sec and only one push rod on each side started oiling....My starter really hates me..... the mech oil guage went to maybe 3psi then dropped off to 0.

could my filter be the issue? It's a new Wix filter..
Could it be the starter just can't turn it fast enough to build pressure?
Any ideas what is going on here? I'm completely frustrated right now.

You are getting flow so you are probably just fine! Start the engine and watch the gauge. More than likely oil pressure will come up within 10-15seconds.

I’ve rebuilt 3 LS engines and never had any success with using the starter to build oil pressure. Start it up and you’ll have oil pressure within 5-10 seconds.

Oil pressure should come up instantly once the engine starts.

great to hear!!. I'm use to SBF where I can hook it up to a drill and spin it to build pressure.
how long would you suggest running it?

That crank is spinning like no man's business when the engine starts up. If you don't see pressure on the oil pressure gauge "A gauge known to be working correctly" at start up then you should shut it down. I know it's nerve racking but from what you've described your getting oil through the engine and to the filter which are good signs. Good luck and I hope it all works out!

I've never really had a problem with the electronic oil sensor on the white car but it's also set up for a mechanical gauge. I purchased this kit from JEGS for my strip car build as I really don't like depending on electronic gauges.
