Default vehicle speed sensor

Ok - so after lots of reading - I can not find anywhere where a stand alone engine wiring swap requires a vehicle speed sensor - however my new aftermarket engine harness designed for stick or pre electronic trans ie T350 - T400, says to have a VSS installed to prevent stalling on hard braking etc??

if in fact I need a VSS - how where etc and with what, do I install one?

It is not required, but highly desirable.

if desirable - how does one go about intalling one somewhere on a vehicle with zero electronics?

You can also use an old-school pickup/magnets on the driveshaft such as used by many aftermarket cruise-control units.

That's a Hall Effect sensor (3 wires) the stock GM VSS are VR (2 wire).

This works.

It is 3 wire also (red, black and white) vs the GM 2 wire, but that is because it wants 12V to operate, on top of the 2 signal wires.

So give it ignition 12V on the red wire , black wire goes to PCM's VSS 'low' , the white wire to the PCM's VSS 'hi' , i'll put up the following example, an 0411 PCM , look at the bottom diagram for the low and high pinouts. If you have a newer PCM find the correct hi and low pin outs for your PCM.

Dakota Digital sells a pass thru 2 wire pass thru sine wave VSS that allows you to use your mechanical speedo too. It works, not sure if a 3 wire square wave will work. DD also has a short speedo cable extension if the VSS is tight against your floor pan. It does not put out a high enough ppm to get the 411s DBW cruise control to work well. I've also used aftermarket 2 wire VSS on a T10 manual trans revere gear as a reluctor. You just need the spacing between the VSS and reluctor to put out enough voltage for the 411.

depends on your ecm. gm stuff uses VR 2 wire sensors. if you have a terminator x you need a 3 wire hall effect.
i just installed the wheel from jags that run. $90 and went right on the rear yoke.
