Good to know that's not the issue. I liked where you were going with a radiator that is having flow issues. Do you have another radiator you can try as a test? I think that would be my next step.

He suspects air flow ACROSS the radiator I think, not coolant flow through the radiator.

I don't think it is a radiator coolant flow issue, it is an airflow issue across the radiator while driving. Airflow through the compartment isn't designed well on older trucks and I have a feeling they relied on mechanical fans to always be aiding in air flow. The electric fans and shrouds are the biggest change I made to the cooling system from the factory toyota one.

If the radiator was designed for a 6 cylinder, it very well could be too small or not deep/thick enough. Regardless how much airflow it gets, it might not be good enough. Also,…… you could still have air in the system.

some people have a hell of a time purging the system while other don’t

Alright so I came home today and pulled the shroud and fans. I drove the same route I did yesterday. It is cooler today. Only 80F. But it never went over 175F! So now I know the problem is my shroud design. My photos still sent getting approved to post but here are links to my shroud design if anyone has any input. Basically just enough room for the two fans and flaps along the top.

Glad you got it figured out. Like Michael said, look into adding some flaps that will open at speed. Luckily the C7 fan that I just swapped on my car has those flaps built into the shroud. Not sure if you have the ability to control a PWM with your setup, but if you do, the C7 is a great option and is fairly inexpensive. It's a brushless SPAL fan that flows around 3k CFM.

I put flaps along the top. I need to redesign to add some for the bottom as well. I have two soap fans currently rated at 4000cfm. I need to stick with factory fan control for emissions.

I have the YJ (1994) My biggest issue is my winch and front bumper setup probably blocks more air than it should..
