Default Code scanner questions?

I installed a connect and cruise LS3 and started it for the first time last weekend. A friend brought his Snap On code scanner and it worked perfectly. I bought an Autel AL619 for myself to have just to be able pull codes and do basic functions. It powers up and loads 100% but then goes to "please wait" and won't go any further. I'm waiting on a response from Autel customer service. In the meantime, I tried another friends cheapo scanner and it won't go past asking for a VIN number. I don't know how people get around not having a VIN for all these installs without a VIN?? Is there a way around the VIN deal or a recommended scanner that will work better in this application? Should the Autel work? My GM instructions indicate specific year models for Camaro, Cadillac, and Corvette, but neither scanner gives an option to enter this info. Any help appreciated.

crate motors don't have conventional VIN nor operating system as a normal car. aftermarket generic scanners don't recognize that. I have only seen hpt or similar software packages recognize it.

Your Autel should have a generic global OBDII function on it that I would think would read it. At work when I use our Autel, I almost never put in the VIN.

Yes. Global OBDII should get you into anything you’ll need. Anything past that (bi directional functions or manufacture specific codes) will require a Tech II or a MDI unit.

I just got back on this last night and found the issue. The problem is with a part I bought that I installed on the OBD 2 connector that gives you 2 ports to hook things up. I needed to connect the port to a BIM module and cruise control. I bought a Tee, which Aoto Meter calls a signal splitter, and one side of the Tee only works part of the time. On startup day Bill's scanner worked fine on the bad side, BUT mine only works part of the time. I did a pinout and it's wired correctly and I can't see any damage to the connections so I think the issue is internal where I can't actually see what's going on. My new scanner works fine every time on the GM harness and the "good" side of the Tee. Anyway, I have a new one on the way and hopefully that will take care of it.

The spitters are known not to be reliable. Whether that’s brand specific or not, who knows.

I’ve heard Dakota Digital tell people not to use a spitter for their dash modules for that reason. I’ll be curious to see if your new spitter actually works correctly.

A little more info on this issue. My combo is an LS connect and cruise package. I have Dakota Digital gauge cluster, BIM module, and Dakota cruise control. Dakota recommended a signal splitter for this setup. One side of the Tee goes to cruise and the other side of the Tee goes to the BIM module. It has been a couple of years ago when I bought the stuff and things may have changed since then. Anyway, I bought an Auto Meter splitter and wired everything up and my code scanner reads intermittently. Sometimes it will not communicate. SO today I figured out how to create the problem and then make it go away. Here's the setup. My code scanner is on one end of the Tee and remains untouched. Cruise is not hooked up yet. If I plug in the BIM module on the other side of the Tee, the code scanner doesn't work. If I unplug the BIM module the code scanner works. I did this several times and its consistent. I posted a pic below of the signal splitter for reference. This is the 2nd one by the way because I thought the issue was in the splitter itself. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Second thing is if I have to the unplug the BIM to make my code scanner work no biggie, but now I'm wondering if my cruise will work with the BIM? Anyway, I would appreciate any ideas on this and I'm planning on calling Dakota on Monday to see what they say.

Here is a discussion we had about this same issue
What I understand is the OBDII info will only connect to one identifier reliably. Usually a 2nd indentifier will be ignored.
I had the same issue with my Dakota Digital setup.

Isn't there a way to hardwire the cruise control in so that it doesn't need an OBD2 port? I thought I saw on Rostras website that it was possible, but I was looking at GenV stuff, although I would think they would be the same.

That's a great idea I'll pursue that depending on how the conversation goes with Dakota tomorrow.

This is the one I was looking at. I'm pretty sure Dakota Digital sells cruise control systems made by Rostra. Form5297.---.qxd (rostra.com)

Eric thanks for this info. Dakota thinks my current setup will work, which is running an ODB2 splitter to a BIM module and CRC 1000 cruise module. The way he explained it to me, and this CanBus stuff is all new for me, but he said the BIM and cruise are just reading info as it comes by. The reason the code scanner won't work with the BIM is because the scanner is making a "request" from the computer, and in the network world that is a different than just reading info. I hope I explained that correctly. If and when I get to the cruise part I will keep the Rostra unit in mind in case my current setup won't work. Thanks again!
