Default external ffuel pump

When it becomes necessary to run an external fuel pump which pump is best? I want one that will last and be quiet.

I've had an external Walbro255 on my truck for over 10 years now, and has like 60k-ish miles on it and it's still going fine. However, it is mounted directly under the tank and the fuel outlet is at the bottom also, so it doesn't have to work to pull fuel, it gravity feeds straight into it, so that probably helps the lifespan some.

Thanks for the reply. I assume the Walbro inline is different than the in tank pump, is that correct? What is the noise level? Real minefield getting a genuine Walbro pump but I expect to pay a little over $100 for the rear thing, right? Not crazy about coming off the bottom of the tank but I know these pumps are not good at sucking, just pushing.

I've used a external Bosch 044 pumps on a few LS swaps. Worked well and never had an issue.

Some of the external pumps are loud, what is the noise level of the Bosch unit?

You could hear it an idle like at a stop light but nothing after that as you are driving. I used rubber grommets to reduce the noise.

My setup is 2 pumps, 1 Bosch 044 and a 1 Weldon 2345A. I don't really hear the Bosch.

As for when to make this move, it's situational. But if you goin for 1000+ HP they make more sense.

Mine is actually very quiet. You can hear it without the engine running, but once you start it, you can't hear it at all.

That is what I like, when the key is turned on and before starting I like to hear the pump run, then when running the noise goes away. Thanks.

If I was to do an external tank, I would use it in conjunction with a lift tank.

Not much room in and around a '32 roadster. Been looking at the bolt in the bottom of the tank. If it comes out then I can plumb it over to an inline unit on the frame rail. Not real crazy about coming off the bottom of the tank but necessary in this case. Other option is to buy a new tank with an in tank pump. They are available. Modifying the present tank is not an option because I will NOT cut on a used tank. I'll have to pull the tank out anyway to plum a return (or feed) line so I'll see exactly what fittings are on top of the tank. Wish me luck!

You can do it, just get it very clean. I used about 1 gal of brake clean to get the fuel residue out of the empty tank and then ran air thru it for about 30 minutes. This was on a 68 Cadillac tank that I added a sump to for an external pump to feed EFI.

Another option is to take the tank to a radiator shop and have them soak it for you prior to any welding. On a couple of LS swaps I ran the fuel return line to a nipple I welded into the gas filler neck. Worked well.

I was going to ask what you were working on that you couldn't put an internal pump in. Now that you say it's a 32 Ford, in my opinion, you'd be time and money ahead to just get a new tank with a pump in it.

I took the old tank out to see if it was compatible with an in tank pump and it's not. While cleaning it, it fell over into the rocks and put a bunch of small dents in the only place that really shows on the tank when mounted. Ordered a new tank and in tank pump.

Sorry you got squeezed into making the extra expenditure, but hopefully it's an improvement overall!
