In post #16, LS1 TJ says that he drills three 1/8" holes in the thermostat's outer flange to get some water flowing prior to the thermostat opening. I would think that this would get the air out as well.

I'm getting close to starting the engine on my LS376/480, Tremec T56 Magnum swapped 1991 Foxbody coupe. Hooking up my engine's steam line and filling it with coolant is something that I'm dealing with right now. Good luck on fixing your car's problem.

The easiest way to make sure that the thermostat open quickly on first start is to fill the block by using the upper hose as a funnel. Disconnect the upper hose from the radiator and fill the block as much as it will take, then connect the upper hose back to the radiator. I also like to use a funnel mounted to the radiator fill during first start. This will help to purge any air and replace it with coolant.

I will try using the upper hose to fill it when I try this again, I am using the funnel it just wouldn't open the thermostat it would just get hot and fill up the funnel

Andrew, I'll fill the engine the way you describe.

Do you have a funnel just sitting in the radiator fill port or is it something firmly mounted to the fill port. The old Prestone radiator flush kits had a little plastic pipe that fit tightly into the radiator fill port. I know I still have one or two of those in my garage.
