Default 89 Foxbody

I recently bought an 89 fox body, LS turbo swapped. The car is setup for drag racing only now, but down the road, I would like to get it to be able to do a drag and drive event. But for now, just go fast. 6.0 LS, prc heads, johnson lifters, forged crank, rods and pistons, ati powerglide (1.69 1st), ptc converter, tuned on methanol. Belt driven fuel pump, Jose 88 mm turbo, Holley dominator, 16v battery with 16v alternator, 9in rear end with 3.89 gears, ladder bars with wishbone, big tubs, viking shocks and struts, strange brakes, belek wheels, 10 point mild steel cage. Seller said the car has been 4.80 with the 5.3 at 3200 pounds. Now they have the built 6.0 in it and the added weight is out. I'm taking it for a dyno tune on 1/10. Then as the weather warms up, I'll get a track tuning appointment with my tuner.

I'll post up some pics and a video of it.

My question - What should I do first? Seller said he'd get a dyno tune and then do nothing other than take it to the track and let it rip.

Thanks.

Brian

A tune for the new setup is definitely a good first step.
If you want it to be a street car, I'd look into converting it from methanol to E85 (if you have it available). Your tuner should be able to easily determine what your potential downsides would be switching away from methanol (if any, depending on the setup).

I've heard of people who have a dual injector, dual fuel setup. One set for E85, one set for methanol and two fuel cells. What I read about was when the boost hit above 5 psi, fuel switched over to meth. I'd like to learn more about that, but I will definitely chat with the tuner on options.

Dual fuel setups are better suited for 3000 horsepower cars trying to drive on the street. The reality is that your setup could very well make whatever power you land at with methanol on pump E85 depending on a few factors. Your tuner should be able to determine this after getting a reading on IATs, timing, possibly plug markings, etc.

For example, if the car makes 1100 on a very very safe Methanol tune, it could reasonably make 1100 on E85 and still be in the margin of safety, even if it takes a couple of extra PSI to get there.

Okay. Sounds good. I'll make sure to have a conversation with my tuner.

Default 89 Foxbody

I bought an 89 Foxbody about a month ago. The car is setup to race. I am told that it was a big deal down in TX when it was racing the sbe, 3200 class.

it now has a forged internals 6.0 in with PRC heads, 88 mm turbo, co2 boost control, Holley dominator, 220 pph injectors, methanol, power glide, etc.

I’ve been itching to get it on the dyno and make some pulls there. We had a few issues that we had to resolve. Boost sensor wasn’t working. Swapped sensors and fixed that. Oxygen sensor wasn’t t working. Swapped that and fixed that. Springs in the waste gate were pretty heavy. Swapped those to lighter springs.

We figure that the motor should be good to around 1300 whp. On the last pull, we ran out of injectors. 84% duty cycle. I ordered a set of billet atomizer 550 pph. Last pull we made 25 psi. Head gaskets are mlx, so we are going to swap them as well. Ordered a set of Athena’s. The turbo pumps is going to max around 1300 hp. The shop had a freshened up 98mm promod, so I bought that and having that installed as well.

Car made: 1120.2 hp and 1220.1 ft/lb

next visit in a couple of weeks, I should touch the 1300 hp.

My plan is to run the car this season and get comfortable with it running upper 4’s.

I put a down payment on a dart 427 that has laid down over 1800 whp. That’ll go in later summer. From there, I’m hoping to touch mid 4’s.

I’ll keep this post updated as I progress with it.

I'm making progress. Finally made a decent pass on low boost. 14 psi. 5.33 @ 137 MPH - 1.30 60' time. I'm doing a few suspension tweaks and then I'll be turning up the boost. Goal is to hit a 4.5 or lower this year. The car definitely has the power.

I stayed on the 2 step a little long. I thought I was supposed to see more boost on the launch. 4.6 PSI on the launch.

Well, I finally made a pass with my car. We have had a lot of bugs to work out and the shop had some lessons learned as well. On 14 PSI boost, my car went 5.33 @ 137 MPH. 1.30 60' time leaving on 4.6 PSI boost. I have lots to learn, but finally headed in the right direction. My goal is to hit 4.5's before end of the summer and lower 4's by end of the season. I stayed on the two step too long. I was thinking there would be more boos than 4.6, but even there, good lord. I've never been that fast in a car before. My goal is to get the 60' down to 1.2 or 1.1X this year. We are making a few tweaks to the suspension. My car seems to be separating off the launch too quick. We've been able to launch at a higher boost, but as soon as it separates, like 10 feet out of the hole, traction was breaking. Slowing down the suspension should help with that.

I've made A LOT of changes to the car vs when I bought it. Biggest change has been motor and turbo. Went with a 427 Mueller engine with pro mod 98/108 turbo. The motor is built to handle around 40 PSI. I added a lot of sensors. Davis VPS, DS speed sensor, Front shock travel, rear shock travel, exhaust back pressure, EGT's on the header pipes, then it had the basics. Changed the parachute to launch with a button via pneumatic cylinder or distance set via VPS.
