Default Retain VATS

I have an idea that I’ve been running around with. I don’t know if its realistic or not but I was thinking about removing the ignition lock tumbler from the Camaro donor and hiding it under the dash on a custom panel in my 1966 Chevelle. Has anyone figured out a way to keep the Passkey (VATS) to make your car much more difficult to steal after doing an LS1 swap? The way I think it would work is if I have to leave the car for any amount of time I can remove the VATS chip key so the car would be theft proof. When I start the car I would place the key into the VATS lock and then use the ignition switch on the dash to start the car. Is this possible? How is the Passkey feature wired into the lock cylinder?

Thanks,
Kevin C

What many folks do is buy one of the VATS eliminator modules, and simply put it on a plug. Park the car, unplug the module (take it with you, its tiny), and it won't start.

That's what I'm doing when I get finished. I picked up the VATs eliminator module on ebay for $21.

for a .50 resistor and a 4.00 relay you can do the exact same thing. there are 15 possible resistance combinations, just read the chip in the key with an ohmmeter and get the same resistor from radio shack, heck of a lot cheaper and you won't have to remove anything , you can use anything in the car to activate the relay like a headlight switch for instance.VATS is not the same as passkey , and if you using an F-body as a donor car , it's VATS.

Passkey is a 5V 30Hz square wave where as VATS is a 5V 50Hz square wave signal.

Also, you would need more than just the correct key and the lock. The VATS signal is actually created in the Body Control Module (BCM). When a key of the correct resistance is inserted in the lock, the BCM will generate the signal and send it to the PCM.

This is what I use, click here.

Since the picture, I found a plug that was a lot smaller. Fits nicely in the pocket.
