3rd Gen Swap
I have a 1987 Trans AM GTA with the 5.7l TPI and automatic transmission, its pretty much stock. An acquaintance of mine has for sale a '02 LS1, its the aluminum corvette engine and it has only been run 7 minutes on a dyno, it was never in a car. He wants $1500 for it.
My questions are:
1) Will I need a new tranmission? If so which one?
2) What else will I need parts wise?
3) Is that a fair price for that engine?
Thanks in advance.
I'd answer your questions, but I'm kind of busy.
Because that stuff adds up quick. If you dont have a donor car remember none of your accessories will bolt up so you will need a new ps pump, alternator, starter, and all the brackets to go with it. Your transmission will bolt up but you will need a conversion flywheel because the crankshaft depth relative to the bellhousing mounting surface is different. Prepare to fabricate an intake setup and exhaust y- pipe depending on what headers or exhaust manifolds you use. Power steering hose, throttle cable, a/c lines are all different. If you want to use the ls1 a/c compressor you will need to cut and weld your crossmember. Factor in the pricey wiring harness and PCM. Unless you work at a GM dealer and you cant program the PCM so that will also cost you. Other than that it bolts right in. Fbody oil pan, driveshaft, torque arm all line up like it was designed that way. In the end it'll all be worth it though because it will be a blast to drive.
