i once saw i guy who had a 1976 ford van with an LS1 in the back. he had just solid mounted the rear end into some custom frame rails that didnt curve up at all(hope you guys can picture that i dont know how to better explain it). that would prob be the easiest way to do it. then toss the LS1 in the back with an auto or the t-56 with some serious linkage, haha. i dont know though this is just what i think would work best. no rear suspention isnt as bad as you'd think either.

in response to the weight comment(s), there are certainly better candidates for a lightweight LS1 car, such as a Lotus 7 replica. an aussie company by the name of Elfin has a car very similar to the Lotus that uses a Holden Monaro (Pontiac GTO) drivetrain. in response to the solid rear, suspensionless rears are nothing new...in the world of top fuel drag racing, but for a Civic hatchback, even one strictly for drag racing, would benefit from an active suspension to aid in weight transfer, and of course if it's meant to handle, say no to a solid rear.

first why not move the engine to the rear instead? i know its been done on a del sol. second if your really wanting to have all that torque steer and have the engine up front why not try a northstar v-8 instead? they are already being used in front wheel drive cars? (besides a caddy engine in a budget civic is a laugh by itself) pontiac and other gm programs are running northstars now. the new pontiac grand prix gxp is powered by a smaller version of the ls2 dubbed the ls4 still a v-8 and 290 hp and 325lb-ft that with a 2100lb car you do the math. thats stupid fast.just food for thought.(back ground note i traded a 94 del sol dohc vtec for my current black ram air) NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT
i know that ls1's have done duty in front wheel platforms but the costs must be extremely high. hense the northstar suggestion

anyhow, you sure could make a LS1 rwd Civic Hatchback, there aree guys that have fabbed up Honda S2000 powered rwd Civics before, and RWD rear motor NSX powered Civics before, so its all in the execution of the project and mounts that makes the end result drivable or junk. Get out the steel tubing and go to town on the chassis, it will look 10 times better (to me) if you keep the outside looking stock and dont need to run 6" wide fender flares... maybe tub the rear a bit so you can fit 295's out back? oh well, anyone who's built a hotrod/streetrod could build an LS1-Civic but it would be gret to see one that still handled pretty damn well in the twisties!
anyone here seen the LS1 Miata floating around the internet? Maybe you could use some of the same rear end parts for the Civic?!

I don't like it! It reminds me of an equation that an old wise man once told me....it goes like this:
Junk + Junk = Junk
I'm sorry, but you can't polish a turd!

that car looks dangerous, the whole rear subframe design looks weak and cheaply made. as far as an LS1 in a civic this could be totally done no problem just a little fabrication, full cage and mini tubs to fit a 1/2 decent tire under it

As long as you don't mind driving from the back seat, and you have some good fab skills, this would be great.
Put it in a very stock looking 2 door DX or something just as sneaky.
I have a question for you. Why not do this with something like a Miata instead? Its been done before, and although you'd need a ton of fab work (much less than the civic though) you'd have a RWD vert that only checks in at around 2200 lbs.
Miatas are cheap and the ones with the fixed headlights look pretty cool with their viperish grin.

MM, another idea for you.
Put an LS1 in a fierro. Then you'd have a rear engine LS1, with awesome weight distribution, great power to weight ratio, and great traction, even on street tires. You could have a 30 mpg low 11 second car with just a cam and headers, and still look stealthy stock. Fierros aren't exactly known as great performance cars.
