Default oil pan modifications, what kind of aluminum?

I am putting a ls1 in my 97 tacoma, I am having to notch my oil pan to clear the steering rack, I was planning on taking a 3 1/2" piece of aluminum pipe, cutting it in half, then cutting the c shape out of the pan and welding it in to sink down over the rack. Is there any certain grade of aluminum I need to weld to the pan, I am not familar with welding aluminum, so I was just going to cut everything out and piece it in, then have it tig welded up. Thanks for any suggestions.

the welder I took my pan too used 1/8" 6061 al plate. He also commented on how crappy the casting. Make sure you take it someone that knows what they are doing. The pan should be clamped down to minimize warping and the welds should be dye tested for pinholes afterwards.

Ive been having sever problems with mine too. Totally different car, but same scenario. Needs clearance for steering rack.

I got mine welded no problems, but it warped very badly. Go slow, and be very careful.
I used some 3mm thick alu plate, cut to shape. Probably should have closed the gaps between the pan and palte a bit more though.

I used 0.080" 6061-T6 aluminum, bent the sheet first, and held it on the side of the pan on each side, and marked with a marker, to get the same radius on the pan that is on the sheet i bent.

HI guys: I Would Check out a pan from and 04 GTO Pontiac and measure it I looks Like it will clear steering Linkage without Modification. Also The C6 Oil pan from an LS2 may fit in a lot of cars without modification. Hope This Helps. LOL

Hey thanks for all of the help, I picked up a piece of 6061 3 1/2" pipe, I have got it cut in half, but I haven't cut the pan jet, It really couldn't be in a worse spot, I am going to have to cut right were the drain plug is at, across the pan, and move the pickup right to the back of the pan. The channel will be only an inch and a half thick cut into the pan, so I don't think it will hurt anything, as lon as I move the pickup. I had looked at the gto pan, but I really think I would still have had to cut it too. By the way hersker, the mods you made to your pan looks great I hope mine turns out that good.
