Default Ls1 in 81z28

I'm in the process of buying a 98 ls1 long block from a friend for $500. It has a spun bearing but everything looks great and the crank is turnable. Right now im debating on weather to get a custome harness and get a ls6 intake or just carb it with the edelbrock rpm. The response and mialage advatages of the fuel injection would be good. I dont know if its worth the troubles of getting a custome harness and installing it. What do you guys think?

depends how comfortable you are with wiring. If you aren't comfortable at all I would go with the carb kit. If you are looking for something that is alittle bit more of a challenge go fuel injected. Also if you are looking for the old school look with the carb you can just remote mount the coils shave off the coil bosses or just get custom valve covers. I have heard that setup is pretty easy to install. Hope this helps some.

Whether you go carb or not, you'll still need a PCM and harness to make the ignition system work...

I'm currently doing this swap in my 81Z and going with a carb. You don't need a PCM or harness to run a carb. GM performance parts and Edelbrock make intake kits that have a MSD designed box which will allow you to run the factory coil ignition.

That sounds neat. Where does the distributor go?

In other words, an aftermarket control module and harness...

The ls1 I saw at a shop had the distributor up front like a old school ford motor with all the wires running to it. It had a demon 850 with some kind of high rise intake on it. It was mean.

Yeah I saw the edelbrock package. Thats looks real appealing. Do you know what the price is on it?

Another question is what would be needed as far as modifications and things i would need to buy to fit the ls1 to my th350?

depending on how much you drive, going with EFI could pay for itself in a year with the MPG increase. Not ot mention driveability. I can't imagine EVER going back to a carb for ANYTHING!! EVER!!!

dont waste your money on that carb setup! fuel injection is better! and take this from a KID who has never ever done any wiring at all his whole life... i did my whole swap by myself, well a few friends helped, but none of them helped with the wiring. i did that all on my own and i must say that it was so easy. spear tech gives you instructions on what goes where and what does what. and their harness was awesome! go with a speartech harness and keep the fuel injection, cause once you take that away, you dont have a ls1, you have an all alluminum motor with a carb! trust me it is worth it.

You can get motor plates pretty cheap and should be able get a y-pipe made for it. My vote is stay with the EFI, I think LS1 doesn't have a gear drive for a distributor on their cams so you'd have to buy a custom cam , too . Sounds like you wouldn't be saving any money on a carb swap.

Don't go back in time and use a distributor and carb.
Making a harness is simple, especially with help on this board.
