Where/how to find a motor and trans

Where/how to find a motor and trans What are some good strategies to locate donor cars or engine and trans combos. I am open minded between the LS1, LS6, LQ4 and LQ9. I want the A4 trans. I have seen that they show up on EBay. Have also seen a listing on EBay for a list of salvage operators. How did you guys find your motors?
Also what are some of the criteria used to evaluate a potential motor purchase

i bought mine thru hawks thirdgen.. http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/
i did alot of research on it.. hawks has a rep in the thirdgen fbody world for being a good, honest company. if theres a problem, he(bruce, the owner) does his best to work it out with you. he has VERY VERY few dis satisfied customers... one of the reasons i chose him is BECAUSE i know hes had problems in the past... and everytime, he went above and beyond to solve thoes problems... add in that hes resonably priced and within a 3hour driving distance from me, and my choice was clear.
i waited until hehad a clean, low mile 2002 Fbody LS1 with a 6 spd and snapped it up.
id reccomend calling him first. phone number is on his website.

Nothing bad to say about Hawk's, but just as a data point for you I got mine from www.contemporarycorvette.com and they truck-ship pretty much anywhere.

I bought an engine and trans out of a 2002 T/A WS6 with less than 1700 mi on it off ebay. I also bought ALL the wiring harnesses/CPUs from the car, the dash and instruments, the heating and A/C, brake systems, and Monsoon sound system as a package deal for less than $5K delivered.

IAA also known as the ( insurence auto auction) this is were the insurence companies send totalled vehicles to sell them. you can get your hands on some reall sweet deals for around 2 grand. happy hunting.

Ebay here. Make sure you talk to the seller on the phone prior to buying. I paid $3600 shipped from SC to WA for a 99 LS1 and T56 (45000 mi.) with all acc., wiring, ECM, pedal assembly, drive shaft and exhaust cut just past the cats. And that was 3 years ago.
I have two units right now, One auto and one 6 speed. You can buy the whole car minus the doors interior and dash for 3100.... Still runs and drives. The stick will cost more.

If you want an LQ4 (or any truck motor), try A-1 Truck Wrecking in Rialto, CA, or American Truck Wrecking in Fontana. Big inventories.

I was working with Tennessee Auto to buy an LS1/T56 for my car. They were very helpful and fairly priced. At the time, they didn't have anything in their inventory and I found one locally before they did. That was the ONLY reason I didn't buy one. Good guys to deal with!
